Product Overview

The new DS-530 Color Duplex Document Scanners replaces the older WorkForce DS-520 in Epson’s lineup. The newer scanner includes upgrades, such as faster scanning speed and higher daily duty cycle.

At $399.99, the DS-530 scans at up to 35ppm in grayscale, black and color modes. Its built-in 5o-sheet automatic document feeder can scan both sides of a page in a single pass. The duplex speed is up to 70ipm.

The DS-530 can read in a wide range of formats, from business cards to 8.5″ x 240″ long form paper. It also can scan in folded pages without a carrier sheet. Daily duty cycle is 4,000 pages.

The DS-530 is a compact and lightweight (at 8lbs.) scanner with very strong features. It is suitable for a smaller or medium-sized business, particularly a doctor’s office where patients’ driver license or insurance cards needs to be scanned. We want to especially recognize its single-pass duplexing, ability to scan to the cloud and optional networking features.

Features

There is a good set of scanning tools, including automatic deskewing and background color removal. It also features hole-punch removal, as well as automatic document size detection. Ultrasonic double-feed detection is also included.

Epson utilizes one-touch scanning with up to 30 jobs that can be assigned to specific workflows, such as scanning to PDF and scanning to cloud. Users can scan to Dropbox, Google Drive or Evernote.

Connectivity, to both PCs and Macs, is through USB. There is an optional module for networking connectivity.
Software includes Epson Scan, ISIS/TWAIN, NewSoft Presto!, BizCard OCR, ABBYY Finereader Sprint and Epson Document Capture Software. There is a one-year limited warranty.

About

Epson America is a division of Japan-based Seiko Epson Corporation, a manufacturer and supplier of imaging products, semiconductors, liquid crystal displays, and watches. The company has been an innovative designer of ink jet printers and sells an extensive product line. Most of these are geared to home and school use, but Epson continues to extend its line further into the office environment.

Epson has been making a more aggressive play for the document scanner market, although the company’s been in the multipurpose office scanner business for years. The models and other additions to its model line seem to be part of an effort to further extend its current scanner technology. As part of this effort, Epson makes these scanners available in consumer electronics stores such as Best Buy, along with Epson dealers and on its website.
