Product Overview
Brother has recently released the MFC-J6945DW Series, three inkjet all-in-ones that are intended for small teams and businesses. The three devices include standard printing, copying and scanning, and print at up to 22 ppm (ISO) in black and up to 20 ppm (ISO) in color. They also include a 3.7″ color touchscreen that enables users to create custom shortcuts to access their frequent workflows.
The devices are:
- The MFC-J6545DW ($280) that includes a standard 250-sheet paper tray and up to one-year’s worth of starter black and ink color cartridges
- The MFC-J6545DW XL ($430) that includes the same specifications as the MFC-J6545DW but provides up to two-year’s worth of starter black and ink color cartridges
- The MFC-J6945DW ($350) that includes standard two paper trays with 500-sheet total capacity and single-pass duplexing.
One unique feature is the Brother Page Gauge that uses numerical values to let the user know the amount of ink both used and remaining. Users can then order new ink sooner than if the device runs out of ink.
More details are in our Features section below.
Features
Paper handling on the MFC-J6545DW and MFC-J6545DW XL starts with a 250-sheet tray and a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray. As noted above, the MFC-J6945DW includes two paper trays that totals 500 sheets in capacity. It also includes the 100-sheet multi-purpose tray. The trays support up to 11″ x 17″ paper size.
There’s the 50-sheet automatic document feeder that supports duplex printing. The maximum monthly duty cycle is 30,000 pages, but Brother recommends a monthly volume of up to 2,000 pages.
USB, Ethernet and wireless connectivity are standard. Mobile printing and scanning are supported through Brother’s iPrint&Scan, Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint, and Google Cloud Print. Users can print from and scan to popular cloud storage accounts, such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Evernote, Box and Microsoft OneDrive.
Copy speed is up to 15 ipm (ISO) in black and up to 11 ipm (ISO) in color. Copy features include stacking, sorting, ID copy and removing background color.
The CIS scanning function allows users to scan to email, OCR, FTP, USB, and to network. Note that only the MFC-J6945DW supports duplex copying and scanning. Users can also send and receive faxes via the 33.6 kbps modem. The maximum fax memory is up to 180 pages.
The devices are Windows and Mac compatible, and are under a two-year limited warranty with free phone support for the life of the device.
Brother offers generous aftermarket ink cartridge yields. The Super-High yield for black is 3,000 pages and each color is 1,500 pages. The Ultra-High yield for black is 6,000 pages and each color is 5,000 pages.
We’ve calculated the cost per page based on the Ultra-High cartridges’ yield and prices (found on the BrotherMall site), which is 1 cent in black and 5 cents in black. That is remarkable, especially the color per-page cost, as they typically run at least 15 cents a page or more for small-business ink jets.
