Product Overview

OrangeHRM is an expansive open-source HR software provider, meaning its most basic services are free and web-based.

OrangeHRM’s three software solutions suites are:

  • Open Source
  • Professional
  • Enterprise

The software’s Professional edition offers advanced options far beyond the free version, while the Enterprise suite scales internationally by incorporating location-based reporting and other HR procedural differences that vary by country.

OrangeHRM offers simple web-based demos for all three versions of the software.

For start-up or small-sized companies still trying to get their big data bearings, the demo versions are simple and can give you a solid grasp on what to expect when interacting with an HR solution’s user interface (UI): OrangeHRM Open Source, OrangeHRM Professional, and OrangeHRM Enterprise.


Each of OrangeHRM’s suites have similar Core HR features.

Open Source suite gives the basics for handling HR administrative tasks, while Professional suite scales for a medium-size business with many additional modules, and Enterprise suite builds on Professional with a global platform.

While OrangeHRM covers the typical range of Core HR among most vendors, some of its features set it apart considerably from other options.

Professional’s unique features that upgrade from Open Source are meant to serve as advanced modules for small-medium sized companies.

The asset tracker provides a portal for keeping track of inventory items such as computers, cars, smartphones, and other devices assigned to your workforce. Every asset can be tracked depending on its serial number, model type, status of in-use or in-stock, the assigned employee, the date assigned, and the asset’s warranty end date.

The dashboard gives the user one integrated window for combining data across features, such as any interviews scheduled for the week shown alongside pending leave requests.

Enterprise scales all of Professional’s features to fit large international businesses.

The biggest difference with Enterprise features, is that they include location-based reporting if your company has multiple locations, and options for location-based benefits administration for benefits packages dependent on country.

Open Source has two main differences in its offered features from the paid versions.

System administration has a limited variety of user roles, meaning your company uses one central administrator with full privileges rather than multiple HR managers.

This solution has a basic employee self service, meaning your employees can edit their employee profiles without administrative privileges, but do not have custom user roles within the system. Their interaction with the software is limited to managing their own employee information.

Reporting only has a handful of canned reports and limited possibility to create your own.

The OrangeHRM team is currently in the process of analyzing requirements and designing a new engine. This engine will ultimately feature in a report writer which will allow users to create advanced and cross modular reports.

There are also no accounting features, limiting the software from taking over payroll responsibilities.
