Workforce Now At A Glance

Good: Error-detection feature that ensures data accuracy, employee self-service, automatically deducts and files payroll taxes.
Bad: Despite its importance, constantly updating passwords and verifying accounts can be annoying.
Bottom Line: Payroll and tax module that automates many tasks so administrators can focus on strategic parts of their jobs.

Product Overview

ADP sells a variety of solutions that are targeted to specific company sizes. This review focuses on the ADP Workforce Now platform.

ADP Workforce Now is a human capital management (HCM) system that’s specifically designed for midsized and large companies. As it’s a unified platform, administrators won’t need to worry about manual data entry, which allows them to focus on critical parts of their job. Workforce Now is also customizable to an organization’s specific needs.

The focus of this review will be on its Payroll module. Administrators can process payroll online and in just a few clicks. As the module integrates with the rest of Workforce Now, time-tracking and other important data can easily flow into the payroll system. ADP provides automated reporting of new hires to state agencies.

More information is in our Features section.

For companies that want to outsource some or all of their payroll and HR functions, ADP offers two optional services. First, there’s ADP Comprehensive Services, where dedicated payroll and HR experts provide guidance on recruiting new employees, managing benefits packages and filing payroll taxes. Second, the ADP TotalSource provides full HR service for companies that want to outsource those functionalities entirely.

Features

In addition to payroll processing, the Payroll module includes built-in tax management and compliance functionality. Federal, state and local taxes are electronically deducted and filed, so administrators won’t have to worry about manually doing so. The software can also detect any errors or discrepancies, sends an alert to the administrator and automatically make adjusted calculations.

The Payroll module provides self-service features for employees, including access to their pay stubs, benefits information and leave balance, via the web browser or mobile app.

There’s the Insights & Reporting function where administrators can view and analyze real-time data and run reports. ADP also offers a wage garnishment processing service that deducts garnishments from employees’ paychecks and tracks any legal changes.

Finally, companies can optionally add on these features: integrating to Microsoft Outlook and general ledger, and paid time-off accrual management.

Implementation/Integration

ADP offers its Professional Services implementation package as an add-on for its ADP Workforce Now solution. Companies work with ADP’s consultants on software customization and implementation, such as a tailored strategic implementation plan.

ADP provides a variety of training courses for its solutions. Users have the option to either take a classroom-based course, an online course with a virtual instructor or self-tutorials. The vendor also offers continuing education credits for its clients in such roles as Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Workforce Now integrates to many applications such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, learning management systems, recruiting software, collaboration solutions and benefits administration.

Customer Service & Support

ADP offers different support sites for employees and client administrators. The employee support site has several resources, including answers to common questions, guides on troubleshooting year-end form issues, and phone numbers and links for issues related to payroll or benefits. The client administrator support site has similar content, but specifically targets administrative issues.

ADP’s expert staff provides support on benefits administration and payroll (including contacting the IRS on the client’s behalf), gives HR resources to clients’ employees (HR help desk or forms library), and offers consultations on HR strategy or day-to-day issues.
