Product Overview

The new WorkForce Pro WF-3820 joins Epson’s lineup of inkjet all-in-ones that’s intended for the home and small office market. At $179.99, it has standard printing, copying, scanning faxing functions and uses the PrecisionCore Heat-Free Technology that eliminates heat in the printing process, saving time and consuming less power. The WF-3820 prints at up to 21 ppm in black and up to 11 ppm in color (note that these are ISO speeds).

It includes a 2.7″ color touchscreen and supports USB, Ethernet and wireless connectivity. Users can print from their mobile devices via the Epson Connect solution, Apple AirPrint, Kindle Fire and Google Cloud Print. Within the Epson Connect are the following features: Email Print, iPrint Mobile App, Scan to Cloud, Creative Print and Remote Print. In addition, the WF-3820 is compatible with the Epson Smart Panel App for advanced features, such as setting up wireless networks and checking ink levels, from a mobile device.

More details is in our Features section below.

Features

Paper handling consists of a 250-sheet tray and a 35-sheet automatic document feeder. The monthly duty cycle is 26,000 pages, however, Epson recommends an average of 1,300 pages a month. Automatic duplexing is supported for printing only.

Scanning is done via a color CIS sensor. It supports scan-to-PC, scan-to-cloud, scan-to-email, scan-to-flash drive and scan-to-PDF. File formats supported include PDF, JPEG and TIFF. The Epson ScanSmart feature lets users scan, edit and share documents. Files can be converted to a searchable PDF and users can also save and edit Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint files.

Faxing is supported via a 33.6kbps modem. Memory is up to 180 pages and PC faxing is standard.

In terms of replacement ink, Epson offers both standard and high-capacity ink in four individual cartridges. Each high-capacity cartridge has a 1,100-page yield. We don’t have pricing to calculate the cost per page, but not only could users take advantage of the high-capacity cartridges, they can use duplexing and other environmental features to control printing costs.

And finally, there is a one-year limited warranty.

About

Epson America is a division of Japan-based Seiko Epson Corporation, a manufacturer and supplier of imaging products, semiconductors, liquid crystal displays, and watches. The company has been an innovative designer of ink jet printers and sells an extensive product line. Most of these are geared to home and school use, but Epson continues to extend its line further into the office environment.

Epson has been making a more aggressive play for the document scanner market, although the company’s been in the multipurpose office scanner business for years. The models and other additions to its model line seem to be part of an effort to further extend its current scanner technology. As part of this effort, Epson makes these scanners available in consumer electronics stores such as Best Buy, along with Epson dealers and on its website.
