Datadog At A Glance

Good: Broad integrations let companies track many metrics through a single interface.
Bad: Highly technical features can create a steep learning curve for new users.
Bottom Line: Datadog is an all-in-one cloud-based network monitoring tool with broad integrations and extensive features.

Product Overview

Datadog is a comprehensive cloud-based network monitoring tool with over 350 built-in integrations. Features include network monitoring, application performance management (APM), log management, synthetic tests, alerts, dashboards and collaboration tools.

The solution gives developers and IT operations teams real-time visibility into all of a company’s technology through a single, visual interface. Businesses can track and analyze key network metrics, as well as reduce application deployment cycles and network downtime.

The software is generally sold through monthly subscription plans based on number of hosts, events or logs.

Datadog’s key features include:

Network – The network feature allows companies to visualize traffic flow in cloud-native environments and analyze performance using meaningful, easy-to-understand tags. Users can filter traffic by source and destination, group different networks and report key metrics like traffic volume or transmission control protocol (TCP) retransmits.

Application performance management – APM monitors, troubleshoots and optimizes application performance. It can also trace end-to-end requests across distributed systems, automatically generate service overviews, graph error rates and latency percentiles, and implement code using open-source tracing libraries.

Log management – Log management lets users quickly search, filter and analyze logs for troubleshooting and data analysis. Logs from all services, applications and platforms are automatically collected, tagged and correlated. The feature also helps companies create visualizations and alerts based on log data.

Synthetics – Synthetic tests proactively monitor end-to-end user experience with an intuitive web recorder. Businesses can deploy self-maintaining tests based on artificial intelligence, detect and create alerts for performance issues, and manage service-level agreements and objectives.

Alerts – Companies can create custom alerts for any metric or performance problem. Notifications are available via email, PagerDuty, Slack, etc.

Integrations – The software integrates with multiple products and development stacks to aggregate metrics and events. Integrations include automation tools, monitoring, instrumentation, source control, bug tracking, databases and common server components.

Dashboards – High-resolution interactive dashboards help companies monitor and graph real-time metrics and events.

Collaboration – Collaboration tools provide visibility across teams by letting users annotate changes, keep a record of problems and communication, and discuss issues in-context with production data.

Application programming interface (API) – API access helps companies observe apps and infrastructure by capturing events and metrics using client libraries.

Datadog has pricing plans based on six feature modules. The monthly prices listed below are based on annual billing.

Infrastructure – Infrastructure monitoring tools have three per host, per month pricing plans.

  • Free – Basic collection and visualization features for one-day metric retention and up to five hosts
  • Pro – $15 for dashboards, 15-month metric retention and 350+ integrations
  • Enterprise – $23 for advanced features and controls, machine-learning alerts, live processes and premium support

Log management – Log management has three pricing options:

  • Seven-day retention for $1.27 per million log events, per month
  • 15-day retention for $1.70 per million log events, per month
  • 30-day retention for $2.50 per million log events, per month

Application performance management – APM starts at $31 per host, per month for multiple coding languages, search traces by tags and 1 million analyzed spans with 15-day retention. App analytics, such as machine learning that identifies errors and outliers, can be added for $1.70 per million analyzed spans, per month.

Network – Network visualization and troubleshooting starts at $5 per host, per month.

Synthetics – Synthetic tests are available through two offerings.

  • API tests – Proactively monitor site availability for $5 per 10,000 test runs, per month
  • Browser tests – Monitor critical user journeys for $12 per 10,000 test runs, per month

Real-user monitoring – Real-user monitoring starts at $15 per 10,000 sessions, per month.

New users report the highly technical software has a steep learning curve. In addition, the large number of features can make it difficult to know which tool or dashboard should be used in a particular situation.
