Product Overview
The WorkForce ES-50 and ES-60W are two new portable document scanners in Epson’s lineup. They’re not only used in the office, but field-service employees use them for scanning important documents when they’re offsite. The WorkForce ES-50 scans a single-page document at 5.5 seconds (or 10 ppm), while the WorkForce ES-60W scans single pages as fast as 4 seconds (or 15 ppm). The scan speeds are in 300 dpi (dots per inch) in black, gray and color.
Optical resolution is 600 dpi, while the maximum resolution is 1,200 dpi. Both scanners support document sizes from 2.2″ x 2.2″ up to 8.5″ x 72″. They also can scan business cards, IDs and receipts.
USB connectivity is supported on both scanners, so batteries and external power are not required. However, the ES-60W also supports wireless connectivity and automatically detects between USB and wireless without user intervention. In addition, the ES-60W has an LCD screen that displays wireless status and battery level.
More details are in our Features section below.
We also want to point out two additional scanners in Epson’s lineup, the WorkForce ES-55R and WorkForce ES-65WR. They’re similar to the ES-50 and ES-60W except these scanners are intended for the finance/accounting market. The ES-55R and ES-65WR includes the Epson ScanSmart Accounting Edition Software, which features receipt management and other accounting features. Receipt data are automatically extracted and exported to QuickBooks or Excel.
The ES-50 and ES-60W packs a lot of features into a lightweight device. Weighing just under a pound, both scanners are ideal for workers in both the office and on the go.
Features
The ES-50 and ES-60W devices are compatible with both Windows and Mac systems. The ES-60W allows users to scan documents to Android and iOS devices.
Both scanners include Epson ScanSmart Software that has Nuance OCR for creating editable text and searchable PDFs. They also come bundled with a TWAIN driver for integration to other document management software.
The scanners support automatic feeding mode, which combines multi-page scans into one file and automatically accepts each new sheet as it’s inserted.
The ES-50 and ES-60W has a one-year limited warranty with the option of extended service plans.

Shortcomings
As they’re portable scanners, the ES-50 and ES-60W doesn’t have advanced scanning features, such as duplexing. Users that are looking for a heavy-duty scanner can check out our other scanner reviews.
About
Epson America is a division of Japan-based Seiko Epson Corporation, a manufacturer and supplier of imaging products, semiconductors, liquid crystal displays, and watches. The company has been an innovative designer of ink jet printers and sells an extensive product line. Most of these are geared to home and school use, but Epson continues to extend its line further into the office environment.
Epson has been making a more aggressive play for the document scanner market, although the company’s been in the multipurpose office scanner business for years. The models and other additions to its model line seem to be part of an effort to further extend its current scanner technology. As part of this effort, Epson makes these scanners available in consumer electronics stores such as Best Buy, along with Epson dealers and on its website.
