Product Overview

Epson’s two new portable document scanners are not just for the office. Remote or field-service employees use them for scanning important documents while they’re at a client site or another location. The DS-70 ($129) scans a single-page document as little as 5.5 seconds (or 10 ppm), while the DS-80W ($199) scans single pages as fast as 4 seconds (or 15 ppm). The scan speeds are in 300 dpi (dots per inch) in black, gray and color.

Optical resolution is 600 dpi, while the maximum resolution is 1,200 dpi.

Both scanners support document sizes from 2.2″ x 2.2″ up to 8.5″ x 72″. They also can scan business cards, IDs and receipts. The daily duty cycle is 300 sheets.

USB connectivity is supported on both scanners. However, the DS-80W also supports wireless connectivity and automatically detects between USB and wireless without user intervention. In addition, the DS-80W has an LCD screen that displays wireless status and battery level.

More details are in our Features section below.

The DS-70 and DS-80W packs a lot of features into a lightweight device. Weighing just under a pound, both scanners are ideal for workers in both the office and on the go.

Features

The DS-70 and DS-80W devices are compatible with both Windows and Mac systems. The DS-80W allows users to scan documents to Android and iOS devices.

The scanners support automatic feeding mode, which combines multi-page scans into one file and automatically accepts each new sheet as it’s inserted.

The DS-70 and DS-80W has a three-year limited warranty with next-business day replacement.

About

Epson America is a division of Japan-based Seiko Epson Corporation, a manufacturer and supplier of imaging products, semiconductors, liquid crystal displays, and watches. The company has been an innovative designer of ink jet printers and sells an extensive product line. Most of these are geared to home and school use, but Epson continues to extend its line further into the office environment.

Epson has been making a more aggressive play for the document scanner market, although the company’s been in the multipurpose office scanner business for years. The models and other additions to its model line seem to be part of an effort to further extend its current scanner technology. As part of this effort, Epson makes these scanners available in consumer electronics stores such as Best Buy, along with Epson dealers and on its website.
