BenefitMall At A Glance

Good: Flexible product choices, some HR functions built into PayFocus software, dedicated payroll specialists to help with troubleshooting and other questions.
Bad: Mobile functionality is only available in PayFocus solution, PayFocus is only targeted to small businesses.
Bottom Line: Many payroll solutions for businesses that are either looking to outsource payroll or do it in-house.

Product Overview

BenefitMall provides full-service payroll, as well as payroll solutions. It also offers restaurant-specific and construction-specific payroll. However, the focus of our review will be on PayLoad, PayRight, PayFocus and PayrollOnline.

BenefitMall sells both on-premise and SaaS payroll software. PayLoad and PayRight are installed on a company server, whereas PayFocus and PayrollOnline are web-based solutions. Companies have the benefit of flexible deployment options.

Here is a brief overview of each solution:

PayLoad – PayLoad is integrated with another existing system, such as an accounting system or a Human Resource Management System (HRMS). It includes features such as direct deposit; unlimited deductions and earnings; federal, state and local tax filing; reporting and check printing, to name a few.

PayRight – PayRight is similar to PayLoad, except that BenefitMall handles payroll processing. The user just enters payroll data and sends that to BenefitMall via the Internet.

PayFocus – PayFocus is an online payroll platform. In addition to payroll, it includes basic HR functions such as accessing HR documents, adding new hire information and managing performance reviews. PayFocus also helps companies stay compliant with federal and state regulations by keeping up with the guidelines. BenefitMall updates the solution as needed.

PayrollOnline – PayrollOnline is similar to PayFocus, except PayrollOnline doesn’t handle other HR functions (except for benefits). Users can process payroll anytime, even outside of normal business hours. Each employee can also access current pay stubs and payroll history. In addition to accounting software, PayrollOnline integrates with BenefitMall’s 401(k) and worker’s compensation systems.

BenefitMall provides these optional add-ons to any of their payroll systems:

  • Time and Attendance – Offered by BenefitMall’s time and attendance partner, this solution has a range of methods to capture employee hours: biometric clocks, PC and web punch-in, and clocking in via mobile devices.
  • Background Checks – BenefitMall conducts background searches on behalf of the client. Searches includes criminal checks, job-history verification, education verification and credit reports. Clients can submit search requests via a web-based system, as well as view results of those searches (generally available between 24 and 72 hours of request).
  • Expense Management – Payroll systems integrate with the Certify expense management module to allow users to directly reimburse employees who submit their travel receipts and reports electronically.

As BenefitMall offers both on-premise and web-based options, the implementation process varies. Prospective clients can contact a BenefitMall sales rep for a price quote.

BenefitMall provides online training for all of its payroll products, especially PayFocus.

Shortcomings

Mobile functionality is only available with the PayFocus solution.

Also, PayFocus is mainly intended for the small business market. So larger businesses may want to check out BenefitMall’s other payroll products or another payroll company, such as ADP.
