Xerox WorkCentre 3215 and 3225 Review

Good: Affordable prices, Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile capability.
Bad: Paper handling (251 sheets maximum) is too low for 27ppm-29ppm speed.
Bottom Line: Low-cost small-workgroup MFPs with standard Wi-Fi.

Product Overview

These new Xerox WorkCentre MFPs are the latest entries in the small-workgroup monochrome lineup. There are two devices: the WorkCentre 3215/NI ($259), which runs at 27ppm and includes networking connectivity, and the WorkCentre 3225/DNI ($319), which runs at 29ppm and includes duplexing. Both devices have standard printing, scanning, copying, faxing, and email features, as well as standard Wi-Fi.

These models are powered by a 600MHz processor and start with 256MB of memory. Xerox rates these models for up to 30,000 pages per month. First-page-out time is a very good 8.5 seconds in.

USB, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi are standard. PostScript and PCL are standard. Mobile printing is also offered by way of the Xerox PrintBack, Apple AirPrint, and Google Cloud Print.

The WorkCentre 3215/NI and 3225/DNI devices are good buys for small offices or small workgroups that are looking for multifunction features only but don’t require color. We like that they are affordable, have automatic duplexing (at least on the 3225/DNI), and have standard Wi-Fi connectivity.

Features

Paper handling starts with a 250-sheet standard tray and a single-sheet multipurpose tray. There are no additional trays so the maximum input is 251 sheets. The output tray holds up to 120 sheets. There is a 40-sheet automatic document feeder. Duplexing is standard only on the WorkCentre 3225/DNI.

Scanning features include scan-to-TWAIN, scan-to-email, scan-to-PC, and scan-to-WSD. File outputs include PDF, JPEG, and TIFF. Color scanning is supported.

Faxing features include JPEG compression, secure fax (receive only), color fax (sending only), and junk fax filter.

Cost per page figures for these devices run at 3.4 cents when utilizing the high-capacity toner yields. This is a reasonable figure for this level of the market.

There are other printing features, such as N-up, Watermark, toner save mode, booklet printing, and ability to skip blank pages.

Security features include 802.1 authentication, IPSec, and Mac address filtering.

Shortcomings

For a 27ppm or a 29ppm device, the paper-handling capacity is low (at 251 sheets maximum for input and 120 sheets maximum for output); multipurpose tray is only a single sheet.
