Product Overview

In 2017, Xerox debuted its new VersaLink printer and MFP line that’s designed to help businesses that has limited IT resources work with an easy-to-use and secure printing device. Each VersaLink printer includes a wizard that guides the user in setting up the device and connecting it to their servers. The printer also integrates with mobile devices and cloud accounts.

One of those devices is the VersaLink C505 Color MFP series, which are the multifunction siblings of the VersaLink C500 Series. They print at up to 45 ppm in both black and color, and include standard printing, copying and scanning. First-page-out-time is 10 seconds in color.

There are two configurations: the base model C505/S ($2,119) and the C505/X ($2,489) that includes a standard 250 GB hard disk drive and faxing features.

The C505 comes with a 1.05 GHz processor and 4 GB of memory. Printing languages supported include PCL, PostScript, direct PDF and XPS. USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi Direct connectivity are standard.

As mentioned above, the C505 supports mobile printing. Users can print from a variety of apps, such as Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Mopria, Xerox Print Service Plug-in for Android and Near Field Communication (NFC) devices.

The MFPs also include a 7″ color touchscreen with a touch-and-swipe user interface that resembles mobile devices. They also comes with access to the Xerox App Gallery so users can download specific apps to help customize one-touch printing tasks that reflect their workloads.

The C505 support printing from and scanning to these following cloud accounts: Microsoft OneDrive, DocuShare, Google Drive and Dropbox.

More features on the C505 MFPs is in our Features section below.

The VersaLink C505 MFPs provide strong features for companies that has limited IT resources and need an easy-to-use device. We especially like that they have an easy set up, low operating costs and are adaptable for a mobile office.

Features

Standard paper handling starts with a 550-sheet tray and a 150-sheet bypass. Xerox offers up to four additional 550-sheet trays and a 2,000-sheet high-capacity feeder. Each tray support paper size up to 8.5″ x 14″, however, the high-capacity feeder supports letter-sized (8.5″ x 11″) paper.

The maximum paper capacity is 3,250 sheets. Duplexing is standard. There is a 100-sheet duplexing automatic document feeder.

Standard output is a 500-sheet tray. There are no finishing options. The maximum duty cycle is 120,000 pages per month.

Users can scan to these following destinations: USB, email and network. File formats supported are PDF, JPEG, TIFF and XPS, to name a few.

The faxing function includes a 33.6kpbs modem, as well as LAN faxing, direct faxing to email and fax dialing.

Xerox includes many standard security features, such as secure print, user authentication, network authentication, IP address filtering and access controls, to name several.

There is also the Simple ID feature, where users access commonly-used apps on the home screen. The user is assigned a dedicated ID and password, which they enter only once.

Xerox has a few options in terms of its aftermarket print cartridges: standard-capacity, high-capacity and extra-high-capacity. For our purposes, we calculated the cost per page based on the extra-high capacity cartridges (12,100 pages for black and 9,000 pages for each color). The cost per page for black is 1.9 cents and for color is 10.8 cents. It’s pretty remarkable, especially for an medium-sized market, where color cost per page averages about 13 cents or more.

Businesses can also keep costs down by taking advantage of Xerox’s environmentally-friendly features, such as duplexing and/or choosing its Earth Smart settings as default for printing jobs.
