Product Overview

Toshiba has recently introduced new devices in its monochrome copier-multifunctionals lineup, and one of them is the e-STUDIO2802 Series.

This series consists of two devices: the e-STUDIO2802AM ($2,799) and e-STUDIO2802AF ($3,299). Both devices offer standard copying, printing and scanning – however, the e-STUDIO2802AF also provides standard faxing.

Both machines copy and print at 28ppm. Warm-up time is 18 seconds and the first copy time is less than 6.5 seconds. Memory is 512MB, which isn’t expandable. The maximum duty cycle is 64,000 pages a month.

More details on these devices are found in our Features section below.

The e-STUDIO2802 Series is a good buy for small and medium businesses that want a compact ledger-sized copier. They provide options for companies with various faxing needs.

Features

Paper handling consists of a 250-sheet drawer and a 50-sheet bypass that adds up to a capacity of 300 sheets. There is an optional 50-sheet reversing automatic document feeder. Output is a face-down inner paper exit tray. Paper weight goes up to 120lb. index for the bypass tray and 20lb. bond for the main drawer. The devices accept up to 11″ x 17″ (ledger-size) paper. There are no finishing options.

The print function supports PCL and USB direct printing. USB and Ethernet are standard, while Wi-Fi is optional.

Toshiba’s e-BRIDGE Print & Capture mobile app allows users with Apple and Android devices to scan from and print to the e-STUDIO2802 machines.

The scanning function includes scan-to-network, scan-to-file, scan-to-SMB, scan-to-FTP, scan-to-email and scan-to-USB.

As mentioned above, faxing is standard on the e-STUDIO2802AF only. It includes both G3 and Super G3 compatibility as well as JBIG compression.

Shortcomings

The e-STUDIO2802 Series is mainly intended for SMBs. Larger businesses, or companies requiring more advanced features, may want to check out other Toshiba devices, such as the e-STUDIO507 family.

Also, the automatic document feeder is only optional, whereas it’s typically included as a standard feature at this level of the market.

About

Toshiba has been on the upswing in the office copier business, thanks to a steadily improving product line.

Although it may be among the smaller forces in copiers, the company as a whole is much larger than most of its competitors.

Toshiba handouts include Fortune corporate rankings indicating that its global revenues across all product lines are about the same as those of Canon, Ricoh and Xerox combined.

Product line: In recent years, Toshiba has been raising its copier profile both by re-energizing its U.S. marketing and by becoming more innovative with its products. Its line of e-STUDIO models is quite strong, and the company is starting to make an impact on the market.

Toshiba distribution: Almost all of Toshiba’s brand sales are currently through dealers. However, Toshiba has a subsidiary that has steadily been acquiring dealerships in certain markets to operate them as wholly owned subsidiaries. In all, Toshiba has about 350 copier dealers, of which about 70% handle Toshiba exclusively. Toshiba also sells through its wholly owned Toshiba Business Solutions subsidiaries.
