Product Overview

Ricoh’s latest color printer, the SP C440DN, is aimed at small and medium workgroups. At $1,499, it prints at 42ppm in both black and color. It has a warm-up time of 46 seconds and its first print-out-time in color is 15 seconds.

Its processor speed is 533MHz and memory is 1GB (not expandable). Its maximum monthly duty cycle is 150,000 pages, but Ricoh recommends an average of 20,000 pages per month.

More details on this printer are found in our Features section below.

Pricing details for the toners were unavailable, and we were unable to calculate the cost per page. However, Ricoh reported that the cost of black printing is roughly one cent per page, while the color printing cost is five cents.

With Ricoh’s typical high toner yields (in this case, black cartridge yield is 21,000 pages and color toner yields are 24,000 pages each), the cost per page is remarkable.

The SP C440DN has many features – including unique ones, such as the new ECO-Night Sensor. The printer can also work on two networks. It’s a good buy for small or medium-sized offices with versatile color printing needs.

The SP C440DN has a 4-line LCD panel for tasks including finding files, accessing settings, and monitoring toners and drums.

PCL, PostScript and direct PDF printing language is supported. Users have the option of purchasing IPDS and XPS language. Mobile printing is supported via the Ricoh Smart Device Print&Scan app.

A 320GB hard drive is optional – the maximum number of files it holds is 950.

USB and Ethernet connectivity are standard, while Wi-Fi and parallel are optional. With the SP C440DN, administrators can serve end users on two networks – for example, having a visitor use the printer on a guest network rather than a corporate network.

Paper handling starts with a 550-sheet tray and a 100-sheet bypass. There is an option to add up to three 550-sheet trays for a maximum capacity of 2,300 sheets. The printer handles up a to 140 lb. index in paper weight and up to 8.5″ x 14″ in size (however, users can print banners of up to 49″ via the bypass tray).

The output tray supports up to 500 sheets. There are no finishing options. Automatic duplexing is supported.

The SP C440DN includes a wide range of security features, although some features require the optional hard drive. These features include admin and user authentication, data encryption, network security, wireless LAN security, unauthorized copy prevention, auto logout, and hard drive data overwrite and encryption.

In addition to duplex printing, energy-saving features include the ECO-Night Sensor, where the printer turns off or on automatically based on the ambient lighting in the office.

The hard disk drive is only available as an option.

For businesses that require multifunction color printing, we recommend the Ricoh MP C401 or the C252SF.
