Product Overview

The Ricoh MP C406 MFP is a newer generation version of the older MP C401. Unlike the older model, the MP C406 has a slower color speed (36 ppm compared to 42 ppm in the MP C401) and doesn’t include a finisher. However, compared to the MP C401, the MP C406 includes the 10.1″ Smart Operation Panel as a standard feature.

At $5,745, the MP C406 prints and copies at 42 ppm in black and 36 ppm in color. It has a 533 MHz processor and 2 GB of memory. The hard disk drive is 320 GB. In addition to printing and copying, the MP C406 offers standard scanning and faxing. It’s one of the few color copier multifunction printers (MFPs) that prints and copies only up to 8.5″ x 14″.

As mentioned above, the 10.1″ Smart Operation Panel is standard. In this panel, users can drag and drop or pinch, flick, and swipe icons, much like a tablet. Users can access the Web via the panel, and perform quick copy, fax and scan functions. They can also create one-touch folders for easier workflow, as well as add widgets for notifications and other settings.

More information on the MP C406 is in our Features section below.

The MP C406 is a good buy for small to medium-sized offices or departments with color needs, but not 11″ x 17″ capability. Its compact design can fit on desktops or in cramped spaces.

Features

The MP C406 includes standard PCL and PostScript printing language. It’s also capable of printing direct PDF files. XPS and PictBridges languages are optional. USB and Ethernet are standard. Wi-Fi and parallel are optional. Mobile printing and scanning are supported via the Ricoh Smart Device Connector app.

Paper input starts with a 250-sheet tray and a 100-sheet bypass. There is an option of adding one or two trays of 500 sheets each for a total capacity of 1,350 sheets.

There’s a 50-sheet automatic document feeder that supports duplexing. Output is a standard 100-sheet tray with an optional 100-sheet one-bin tray. With the exception of the bypass tray, each tray supports up to 43 lb. bond paper weight. (The bypass supports up to 58 lb. bond.)

The MP C406 includes a Document Server that can store up to 3,000 documents on the hard drive.

The scanning function includes a speed of 32 ipm simplex in black and color. It supports scan-to-email, scan-to-folder, network scanning and scan-to-media. File formats supported are PDF, TIFF, high-compression PDF and JPEG. Other scanning features include universal send, LDAP support, digital signatures on PDFs and PDF encryption.

The faxing feature supports a 33.6 kbps modem with JBIG compression. Standard fax memory is 4 MB, which is approximately 320 pages. Internet and LAN fax are standard, while remote fax is optional.

There are many security features, including user authentication, IP address filtering, hard drive overwrite and encryption, secure printing and copy guard security, to name a few. For extra security, users can purchase an optional NFC card reader for swiping an NFC-enabled ID card at the device.

Finally, we want to point out a few more features. First, there’s the Device Software Manager app that allows the user to download and install the latest print drivers without help from the IT department. Second, the device can print in silent mode to eliminate printer noise. And finally, there’s the Poster Copy feature that can transform a document into a poster simply by combining nine sheets.

  • Wireless Connectivity?
  • Mobile Printing/Scanning?
  • Finishers?

Shortcomings

The MP C406 doesn’t offer finishers, even as an option. Also, there’s no ledger-sized (11″ x 17″) printing or copying.
