Product Overview

The new Ricoh MP 401SPF joins its color cousin, the MP C401, in the lineup that prints and copies only up to legal-sized paper. It is aimed at the midsize workgroup that does not need ledger-sized (11″ x 17″) handling. There is also its single-function printer sibling, the SP 4520DN.

At $3,310, the MP 401SPF includes standard printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. It also includes 1GB memory, not upgradeable, and an optional 250GB hard drive.

There is also the tiltable touchscreen control panel where users can create shortcuts for commonly-used features. There is also optional access to cloud-based document management and printing services. Such cloud-based services include Evernote and Google Drive.

More details are found in our Features section below.

The MP 401SPF is a compact device with good features for offices that want multifunctionality but does not require color or ledger-sized handling.

Features

There is a standard 50-sheet-capacity reversing automatic document feeder (what we call an RADF). Duplexing is standard.

Output consists of a 250-sheet internal tray. There are no finishers.

Multifunctional features: As noted above, printing, scanning, and faxing are standard. Scan-to functions include email (with LDAP support), folder (SMB and FTP), and URL. Scan-to-media is supported with a USB/SD card, which gives users the capability to scan to a USB flash drive and other similar devices. The fax kit runs at 33.6kbps with a standard 4MB memory. LAN fax and Internet fax is supported.

The print function includes PCL, PostScript, and XPS. USB and Ethernet connectivity is standard. Wi-Fi is optional. Ricoh offers its Smart Device Print&Scan app for smartphones and tablets, as well as optional HotSpot for printing from mobile devices.

Shortcomings

This device only accepts up to legal-sized paper, so companies that want ledger-sized paper handling should check out Ricoh’s other monochrome and color MFPs. Also, there are no finishers offered.
