Product Overview
Kyocera has recently announced two new series of black-and-white single-function printers: the ECOSYS P2040dw and the ECOSYS P3060dn Series. The P2040dw Series is the focus of this review.
The new ECOSYS P2040dw Series consist of two printers: the P2235dw ($506) that prints at up to 37ppm and the P2040dw ($654) that prints at up to 42ppm. Warm up time is 15 seconds and first-page-out time is 10 seconds.
Both printers include a 800MHz processor and 256MB of memory (not expandable).
PCL and PostScript are standard as well as XPS and PDF direct print. The devices also support USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and mobile printing as standard features. Users can print from their mobile devices via Mopria print service, Google Cloud Print or Kyocera’s dedicated mobile print app.
Both devices utilize Kyocera’s PRESCRIBE and COMMAND CENTER RX business applications. With the PRESCRIBE app, users can create, store and print commonly-used forms from the printer. The COMMAND CENTER RX app allows users and administrators to look up paper availability, toner status and other statuses of the device via a web browser.
More details on the P2040dw Series is in our Features section below.
The ECOSYS P2040dw Series is intended for the small-to-medium businesses that’s looking for a way to control printing costs and doesn’t need color or an MFP.
Features
Paper handling starts with a 250-sheet drawer and a 100-sheet bypass. Kyocera offers two 250-sheet drawers for $130 each. Maximum paper input is 850 sheets. All drawers accept up to 8.5″ x 14″ paper. Standard output is only 250 sheets.
The maximum monthly duty cycle is 20,000 pages per month on the P2235dw and 50,000 pages per month on the P2040dw. Automatic duplexing is standard.
Other printing features include EcoPrint, Private Print and job management. Print job storage feature is included with the optional 16GB or 32GB SD card.

Shortcomings
The printers do not support 11″ x 17″ paper size. Also, we don’t have any information to calculate the cost per page of the consumables. But based on Kyocera’s history of providing long-life consumables and other environmental features, the client can expect low cost per page over the life of the printer.
