Product Overview

The bizhub C227 and C287 are Konica Minolta’s latest entries in its color multifunction printer (MFP) lineup.

Konica Minolta continues to enhance its already strong color copier/MFP line with frequent upgrades, especially its touchscreen interface. These powerful and nicely featured devices are well worth considering for a small to mid-sized workgroup.

The models feature Konica Minolta’s INFO-Palette Design control panel, which consists of a 7″ color screen that has a touch-and-swipe functionality commonly found on mobile devices. You can customize commonly used workflows right on the screen. The interface includes a new area for mobile connectivity, as well as an optional voice guidance system for hearing screen instructions. And a web browser is included as a standard feature, providing support for a wide variety of apps.

Both the C227 and C287 offer standard printing, copying and scanning with optional faxing. The C227 ($7,590) copies and prints at 22ppm in black and color, while the C287 ($9,090) has a speed of 28ppm in black and color.

Both devices use 4GB of memory and a 250GB hard disk drive. PostScript and PCL printing support are standard. USB and Ethernet are supported. Mobile printing (via AirPrint, Google Cloud Print and NFC) is standard.

Features

Paper handling: Paper handling starts with dual 500-sheet paper trays and a 100-sheet bypass. There are additional paper options, such as a 500-sheet tray, a dual 500-sheet tray set (letter size only) and a 2,500-sheet large-capacity tray. The maximum paper capacity is 3,600 sheets.

There’s an optional 100-sheet reversing automatic document feeder that scans up to 45ipm. The maximum paper size is 11″ x 17″. Duplexing is standard.

The maximum duty cycle for the C227 is 100,000 pages. For the C287, it’s 120,000 pages.

There’s a standard 250-sheet output tray. There are also a few finishing options. First, there’s a finisher with up to 50-sheet multiposition stapling. A 2/3-hole punch is an optional addition to the finisher. Second, there’s a booklet finisher that saddle stitches up to 20 booklets. There’s also a 30-sheet tri-fold option, as well as a job separator. And a space-saving inner finisher is also available.

MFP functions: There’s a user box that allows users to store scanned documents on the hard drive. Users can create up to 1,000 user boxes to hold up to 3,000 documents total. The scanning function supports scan to email, USB, user box, FTP, SMB and WebDav. LDAP is also supported. Output file formats include JPEG, TIFF, PDF, compact PDF and XPS, to name a few.

The optional faxing uses a 33.6 kbps modem with JBIG compression. Color fax, IP fax and PC fax are standard.

Security features: The C227 and C287 have many security features, both standard and optional. Some of the features include hard disk encryption, job encryption, watermark, IP filtering, secure print, secure fax, optional copy guard and IPv6 authentication. Shortcomings

The automatic document feeder is only available as an option, not as a standard feature, unlike other devices in this market.

Companies that require a standard document feeder can check out our reviews on the Ricoh MP C2503  or Toshiba e-STUDIO2551c.

The quality of print is extremely good. The printed materials have a glossy finish, there are multiple colour arrangement tools for the best printing.
