Product Overview

Epson has traditionally marketed its printers and all-in-ones at home users and small businesses. It has been recently offering more advanced printing features (i.e. PCL and PostScript printing languages) aimed at the corporate printing market. However, it has debuted a new line of inkjet MFPs aimed at the large and enterprise workgroup market: the WorkForce Enterprise line.

The new WorkForce Enterprise WF-C20590 is the first MFP in this new line. It prints and copies at up to 100ipm ISO (the highest speed Epson has to date) in both black and color. It includes the four standard functions of printing, copying, scanning and faxing. Like other Epson devices, the WF-C20590 uses the PrecisionCore inkjet technology, a high-density print chip that can generate up to 40 million precise dots per second.

In addition to Epson’s proprietary printing language, the WF-C20590 supports both PCL and PostScript. USB, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi connectivity is standard. Mobile printing is also supported via the Epson Connect solution. Within the Epson Connect are the following features: Email Print, iPrint Mobile App, and Remote Print. Users can also print via the Apple AirPrint, Kindle Fire and Google Cloud Print.

There is a 9″ color touchscreen for users to access commonly-used workflows. The device also integrates with other web-based applications, such as PaperCut MF, via the Epson Open Platform.

Similar to the WorkForce Pro WF-C869R, the WF-C20590 is sold through the Business Technology Association (BTA) reseller channel, so unfortunately, we don’t have a list price. Companies can contact their local reseller for a price quote.

More details is in our Features section below.

The WorkForce Enterprise WF-C20590 includes all the same features found in other Epson devices plus more advanced features, such as a maximum 5,350-sheet capacity, optional finisher and five ink replacement cartridges. It can be a good buy for large companies looking to maximize color multifunctionality but want to keep operating costs low.

Features

Standard paper handling starts with four 550-sheet trays and an 150-sheet multipurpose tray. Epson offers an optional 3,000-sheet high-capacity tray for a maximum capacity of 5,350 sheets. The device accepts paper sizes of up to 11″ x 17 in its standard trays and up to 13″ x 19″ in its multipurpose tray.

There is also an optional professional finisher for stacking and stapling. There is also a 150-sheet dual-scan duplexing document feeder with a scanning speed of 60ipm simplex and 110ipm duplex.

Scanning is done via a color CIS sensor. It supports scan-to-PC, scan-to-cloud, scan-to-email, password protected PDFs and an address book via LDAP.

Faxing is supported via a 33.6kbps modem. Memory is up to 6MB and PC faxing is standard.

Epson includes five individual ink cartridges: two black, one cyan, one yellow and one magenta. Each cartridge has a yield of 50,000 pages. We don’t have pricing information to calculate the cost per page, but companies expect to save money on ink cartridges in the long run utilizing the high-capacity page yields and the duplexing feature.

The WF-C20590 includes a wide range of security features, such as PIN number certification in order to release jobs, user control access, printer and network settings via Web Configuration, SSL/TLS and IPsec.

Companies’ IT staff can also manage their Epson devices remotely via the Epson Device Admin solution. One environmental feature to note is that the WF-C20590 works with 110 V panels so electrical retrofitting is not required. Therefore, the MFP can be placed anywhere in the office.

There is a 90-day limited warranty with optional extensions offered by Epson resellers.

  • Automatic Document Feeder?
  • Duplexing?
  • Ethernet Connectivity?
  • Wireless Connectivity?
  • Mobile Printing/Scanning?
  • Finishers?

Shortcomings

The warranty on the WP-C20590 is very limited at 90 days compared to a year on most other devices. Companies that want to extend their warranties can talk to their Epson reseller for options.

Also, the MFP is too robust for smaller businesses. Those businesses looking for a full-featured MFP can check out our review of the WorkForce Pro WF-C869R.

About

Epson America is a division of Japan-based Seiko Epson Corporation, a manufacturer and supplier of imaging products, semiconductors, liquid crystal displays, and watches. The company has been an innovative designer of ink jet printers and sells an extensive product line. Most of these are geared to home and school use, but Epson continues to extend its line further into the office environment.

Epson has been making a more aggressive play for the document scanner market, although the company’s been in the multipurpose office scanner business for years. The models and other additions to its model line seem to be part of an effort to further extend its current scanner technology. As part of this effort, Epson makes these scanners available in consumer electronics stores such as Best Buy, along with Epson dealers and on its website.
