Product Overview

The new MX-M905 joins the MX-M1055 and MX-M1205 in Sharp’s production-oriented monochrome MFP lineup. At $37,000, the MX-M905 copies and prints at up to 90ppm and includes standard printing, copying and scanning functions.

It includes a 1.91GHz processor, 6GB of memory and a 1TB hard drive. There’s also a 10.1″ customizable touchscreen display for accessing commonly-used workflows.

Warmup time is approximately 210 seconds (4 minutes). First-copy-out time is 6.3 seconds from the document feeder.

More details are in our Features section below.

The MX-M905 is intended for large offices with high-volume printing needs (copy rooms) or for light-production environments (small central repographics departments). It includes scalable features, such as finishing options, to help those businesses produce higher volume of work.

Features

Paper handling: The MX-M905 includes a standard two-tray tandem configuration that consists of one 1,200-sheet tray and one 800-sheet tray. There are also two trays of 500 sheets each and a 100-sheet multi-bypass tray that adds up to a standard configuration of 3,100 sheets.

Companies can choose to add additional trays as options: a 3,500-sheet large-capacity tray ($1,570),  a 3,000-sheet ledger-sized large capacity tray ($3,050), a 5,000-sheet two-tray large-capacity air feed unit ($6,700) and a 500-sheet multi-bypass unit ($1,760, requires purchase of large-capacity air feed unit). The maximum capacity is 8,500 sheets.

There’s a standard single-pass duplexing document feeder. It has a 250-sheet capacity and can scan paper up to 240ipm.

Sharp offers a variety of finishing options. First, there is a 4,000-sheet stapling finisher with 100-sheet multiposition stapling ($7,550). There’s also the 4,000-sheet saddlestitch finisher with 100-sheet multiposition stapling and 80-page booklet making ($10,720). A 2/3-hole punch unit can be added to either finisher for $945.

A third finisher includes a 3,000-sheet stacking capability and 50-sheet multiposition stapling ($4,200). There’s also a 2,000-sheet booklet-making finisher with 50-sheet multiposition stapling and 15-sheet saddlestitching for $5,600. There’s an option to add a 2/3-hole punch unit to either finisher for $865.

Other finishing options include a multi-folding unit ($15,700), a two-tray post-process inserter unit ($3,860), a face-trimmer unit ($6,700) and a GBC SmartPunch Pro ($15,000) that uses up to seven punch styles.

MFP Features: PCL and PostScript are standard. Ethernet, USB and wireless connectivity are all included. Mobile printing and scanning are also supported via the Sharpdesk Mobile app, Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print and the Sharp Print Service plugin.

The MX-M905 offers standard network scanning. That includes one license for SharpDesk scanning software, which is a utility allowing you to program the models with email addresses, FTP servers and network PCs as destinations for scanned documents using a networked PC. The scan function includes both LDAP support and network authentication. File formats include TIFF, PDF, XPS, PDF/A and encrypted PDF.

The MX-M905 can also (OCR) scan to Microsoft Office formats such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

There’s a compact PDF feature that can reduce the size of scanned color documents, making it more manageable to scan and save those documents.

Sharp offers its Cloud Portal Office for storing and sharing documents and content in the cloud. Users can also access cloud apps such as Microsoft OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Online and Google Drive.

Security features: Security features include account management, 256-bit encryption, user authentication, SSL encryption and confidential printing. Sharp includes an end-of-lease feature that erases all data at the time the device is traded in.

Shortcomings

The MX-M905 doesn’t include some of the features of the MX-M1055/MX-M1205, such as paper catalog menu choices, Fiery controller, a 5,000-sheet stacker and Plockmatic booklet maker. However, it’s targeted to high-speed office environments, whereas the MX-M1055/MX-M1205 are for light-production environments.
