It scans in both black and color at 30 ppm simplex and 60 ipm duplex. The DS-520 can read in a wide range of formats, from business cards to 8.5″ x 36″ long form paper. It also can scan in folded pages without a carrier sheet. There is a built-in 50-sheet automatic document feeder. Daily duty cycle is 3,000 pages.

The WorkForce DS-520 is a compact and lightweight (at 5lbs.) scanner with very strong features.  It is suitable for any office size, particularly a doctor’s office where patients’ driver license or insurance cards needs to be scanned. One feature we especially want to recognize is its ability to scan documents to the cloud.

There is a good set of scanning tools, including automatic deskewing and background color removal. It also features hole-punch removal, as well as automatic document size detection. Ultrasonic double-feed detection is also included.

Epson utilizes one-touch scanning with up to 30 jobs that can be assigned to specific workflows, such as scanning to PDF and scanning to cloud. Users can scan to Google Drive or Evernote. Epson has recently introduced the ability for users to scan documents to OneNote, a note-taking app.

Connectivity, to both PCs and Macs, is through USB. There is an optional module for networking connectivity.

About

Epson America is a division of Japan-based Seiko Epson Corporation, a manufacturer and supplier of imaging products, semiconductors, liquid crystal displays, and watches. The company has been an innovative designer of ink jet printers and sells an extensive product line. Most of these are geared to home and school use, but Epson continues to extend its line further into the office environment.

Epson has been making a more aggressive play for the document scanner market, although the company’s been in the multipurpose office scanner business for years. The models and other additions to its model line seem to be part of an effort to further extend its current scanner technology. As part of this effort, Epson makes these scanners available in consumer electronics stores such as Best Buy, along with Epson dealers and on its website.
