Product Overview

Canon’s new black-and-white MFP, the imageCLASS MF449dw, provides robust features for companies that already have a Canon device installed on their site and need a more compact copier for a small workgroup. The MFP prints at up to 40 ppm and include printing, copying, scanning and faxing functions.

The imageCLASS MF449dw comes with the Canon Custom Processor, 1 GB of memory (not expandable), and a 5″ color touchscreen control panel. The touchscreen works like a smartphone and supports customized printing workflows.

One way it does is Canon’s Application Library, a platform that lets administrators set up one-touch button for several key functions: Print Template, Standby Slide, Consumables Information, and Languages (to support multiple language environments).

First-print-out time is 5.3 seconds. The MF449dw supports Canon’s proprietary printing language, as well as PCL and PostScript. USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi are standard. Users can directly print JPEG, PDF, and TIFF files.

Mobile and cloud printing is also supported. Users can print from their mobile devices using any of the following apps: Apple AirPrint, Canon PRINT Business, Mopria Print Service or Google Cloud Print.

Canon offers an optional uniFLOW portfolio that helps companies better manage their output. Deployed either in the cloud or on-premise, the solution allows administrators to track their printing costs. There’s also the imageWARE Enterprise Management Console, which is used to manage the entire Canon printer fleet from one location.

More details on the device is in our Features section below.

Features

The imageCLASS MF449dw includes a 250-sheet paper tray and a 100-sheet bypass. Canon offers an optional 550-sheet tray that adds to a maximum paper capacity of 900 sheets. All paper trays accept up to 8.5″ x 14″ paper.

The output capacity is 65 sheets. The recommended monthly page volume is between 750 and 4,000 pages. Duplexing is standard. There is a single-pass duplexing document feeder that scans up to 70 ipm in black and 26 ipm in color. It holds 50 sheets.

Users can scan to email, SMB and FTP destinations. They can also scan documents to their mobile devices with the Canon PRINT Business app. File formats supported include TIFF, JPEG, and PDF (both compact and searchable). LDAP authentication is supported.

The faxing function uses a 33.6kbps modem with JBIG compression. It supports up to 512 pages of fax memory. Internet fax is supported.

The MF449dw ships with a standard toner cartridge of 3,100 pages. However, Canon offers a high-yield aftermarket toner cartridge that yields 10,000 pages. Unfortunately, we don’t have the information to calculate the cost per page. Aside from using the high-yield cartridge, businesses can save on printing expenses by taking advantage of Canon’s environmental features, such as duplexing.

We also want to point out that there’s an optional Auto Replenish Service subscription program that ships new toner cartridges to the user when their device emits a low-toner alert.

Security features include department ID authentication, secure print, IP/MAC address filtering, and Wi-Fi authentication. The Verify System at Startup feature verifies that the device firmware and Application Library are safe from any unauthorized modifications.

The standard limited warranty is for one year. However, users can optionally purchase warranty packages to extend it.

Shortcomings

The imageCLASS MF449dw doesn’t offer finishers, even as an option. It also doesn’t support 11″ x 17″ paper size.
