eThink LMS At A Glance

Good: Access to extensive LMS features via eThink's partner network, unlimited storage, responsive customer support.
Bad: Consulting is not available for Moodle or Totara clients that host either solution on their own servers.
Bottom Line: Moodle and Totara LMS partner that empowers organizations to better deliver their learning initiatives.

Product Overview

eThink Education is a partner of two open-source LMS solutions, Moodle and Totara Learn. Its clients use the platforms for new hire onboarding, employee professional development, external client/vendor training and more. We’ll briefly discuss both Moodle and Totara.

Moodle is designed to help organizations educate their learners. It has a modular structure that lets teachers and administrators build their own curriculum using plug-ins for various workflows, content and activities. For more information about Moodle, check out our full review here. eThink also offers Moodle Workplace specifically designed for companies that want to provide a flexible training program for their employees.

Totara is a fully customizable platform that allows companies to provide training and performance management to their employees. The interface can be personalized to fit the company’s brand, and learners can access Totara from any device.

Some benefits of using eThink as a Moodle and Totara partner include:

  • A fully-hosted environment, so companies won’t need to worry about hosting and maintaining software on their servers
  • Responsive customer support (help desk tickets typically addressed in under an hour)
  • Access to eThink’s partner network of eLearning tools, such as content creation
  • Unlimited modules and storage
  • Integration to companies’ business applications (e.g., enterprise resource planning systems, customer relationship management systems, human resource management systems)
  • Unlimited support and consultation around the LMS and learning ecosystem

Features

Moodle Workplace and Totara offer similar features.

Centralized location of resources – Learners can quickly access course materials, assessments and other content in one place.

Personalized learning paths – Because each employee has different skills and competencies, a one-size-fits-all approach may not always work. Both Moodle and Totara let administrators customize specific learning paths based on job description or department. There’s also a hierarchies feature that lets administrators assign learning paths based on their company’s organizational structure.

Certification and compliance reporting – Administrators can set up learning paths for employees who need to complete certification/recertification requirements. Moodle and Totara can then automatically alert the employee on the deadline for the recertification training. Both solutions also offer status reports, so administrators can ensure employees adhere to compliance requirements.

Reporting and analytics – Administrators can build custom dashboards or reports for various metrics, such as learner engagement and course progress. They can schedule reports to be sent automatically to different recipients.

We’ve indicated other features of both platforms in our Features checkboxes below.

Finally, we want to point out that Totara Learn includes performance management features, such as performance reviews and 360-degree feedback. These features help managers monitor their employees’ performance so that it aligns with their goals. Managers can assign training courses based on the skills the employees want to learn or in areas that need improvement.

Implementation/Integration

The eThink Moodle and Totara implementation processes take 8 to 12 weeks on average. The implementation workflow starts with a detailed discovery period, allowing eThink to configure either Moodle or Totara to meet each client’s unique needs.

eThink is an AWS Advanced Technology Partner offering the ability to scale to hundreds of thousands of users in their cloud hosting infrastructure. It also completes all necessary Single Sign-On (SSO) and application integrations. Training can be conducted on-site or remote, and eThink provides multiple asynchronous options.

Customer Service & Support

eThink’s support is offered through its help desk software, phone and a detailed knowledge base. As of its last customer support audit, the first response time to a help desk ticket was 45 minutes.

Pricing

Pricing is assessed in blocks of 500 users. There is a one-time implementation fee in addition to an annual hosting and support fee. eThink says that its pricing is traditionally at least 30% lower than its primary LMS competitors.

eThink doesn’t publicly display its pricing information. Please contact the company directly for a quote.

Shortcomings

eThink does not offer Moodle or Totara consulting for organizations that self-host these solutions. Each client’s solution is hosted by eThink in its AWS environment. From time to time. eThink had to turn away potential clients that are looking for it to provide a Moodle or Totara solution to host internally on their own servers.
