Yellowfin At A Glance

Good: Ability to provide governed enterprise BI platform that's easy to use, over 50 data visualization types offered, ad-hoc analysis from any browser or mobile device, Location Intelligence functionality.
Bad: Does not include financial forecasting or profit analysis.
Bottom Line: Yellowfin provides more flexible offerings within its platform, such as over 50 chart offerings, advanced calculation and functions, and more social collaboration features.

Product Overview

Like other BI vendors, Yellowfin emphasizes user ability to create their own reports while maintaining IT governance. But Yellowfin also offers more functionalities within the platform, such as connecting from multiple data sources on the fly, the ability to drill anywhere within the data, and advanced calculations. Yellowfin also has over 50 data visualization types for users to choose from.

Yellowfin 7 has some enhanced features. For instance, Yellowfin has introduced its new content-creation module for streamlining BI steps and includes easy-to-configure formatting controls for mass distribution. Also within this module is the ability to create multiple charts within a single dataset, and to add custom text, images, or annotation for data visualization. Other enhancements include ad-hoc analysis from any browser or mobile device. Users can also view, sort and explore their BI content from their mobile device. And finally, there is an enhanced Administration Console that streamlines administration functions, i.e. allowing administrators to manage their account and users within a single screen.

Yellowfin has released its 7.3 version in late 2016 that includes enhancement to its content-creation module, a new data preparation module and the ability to create visualizations more efficiently with its Set Analysis feature. With the data preparation module, users can transform their data for further analyses or reports without having to connect to other systems. The module includes features such as data cleaning, profiling and modeling.

We’ve indicated Yellowfin’s standard features below. However, we want to highlight a few additional features.

Like most BI vendors, Yellowfin offers mobile BI capability. Yet, one unique feature is its Location Intelligence. The Location Intelligence functionality allows users to see their data in map form, in addition to charts, graphs, etc. When looking at a map, users can find geographic trends (i.e. customer demographic) within their data. Users can also find new customer markets to tap into. Yellowfin offers a variety of mapping visualization formats, allowing users to easly merge spatial and regular data to create multilayered maps in a variety for formats, from basic Google Maps, to GIS data sets and Web Maps Services (WMS). Yellowfin also allows users to integrate or create mash-ups using existing GIS tools – such as ESRI or MapInfo – via WMS.

Yellowfin also promotes collaboration within its BI platform. Users can share data and reports within their company or outside of the company. Other users can then follow the data and even make comments, much like a social media site. Users can even customize his or her “timeline” and even create decision polls. Timeline is similar to a Facebook newsfeed – it catalogs each user’s actions within Yellowfin. Yellowfin emphasizes security within the platform – users have the ability to make comments public or private and even authenticate who can access data.

new user

on 2017-06-27 20:16:23

I'm a new user of yellowfin, having more recently been a user of some of the bigger tools. I found it far easier to creates the reports I needed. being able to send out alerts and the "facebook like" task management was kinda cool as well. I found the pricing to be very reasonable.

Pretty Cool Software

on 2017-06-25 23:33:26

I have been using Yellowfin for about a year. I'm surprised it's not as well known as other brands, since it offers in many cases better functionality. The built in governance features are above and beyond what else is on the market. The pricing is also pretty good. While there are cheaper options on the market, Yellowfin allows you to do more without the overheads attached to, say a Power BI deployment.

YellowFin costs USD$3,000 for 5 users per annum whilst PowerBI costs only USD$599.40 for 5 users per annum. YellowFin is stuck in the dark ages where a company peddles an average product and fleeces anyone who uses it. PowerBI is secured by one of the most trusted SaaS providers in the world whereas YellowFin is well .....
