Birst At A Glance

Good: Big data capability, works with existing systems (i.e. Salesforce or SAP), data analytic solutions available for specific business users (i.e. Marketing, HR).
Bad: Reporting limited to basic ad-hoc reports, English is only available language for support, does not support iOS (as Birst is an Adobe Flash-based solution).
Bottom Line: Birst's software comes in two versions so that companies can choose a software based on their needs.

Product Overview

Birst takes your raw data, runs it through their Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) process and then automatically builds a data warehouse to make it ready for analysis. Birst make their data accessible through visual analytic and reporting tools so users can get answers to hard questions. Birst’s software is aimed at all business users from IT to marketing to executive management.

Birst’s BI software comes in two editions: the Discovery edition and the Enterprise edition. The Discovery edition is the more basic software and is aimed at the users who need fast and simple information. It comprises of ad hoc analytics, dashboards, and mobile analytics. The Discovery edition is also recommended for data that comes from one or two sources and already contains historical context.

The Enterprise edition contains all the features of the Discovery Edition, plus adds automated data warehousing, data mashups, and dimensional database management.

Birst also provide data analytic solutions that are specifically for the following users – sales, Marketing, Finance, HR, and supply chain.

In 2015, Birst has introduced an upgrade called the Birst 5X. Birst 5X includes features such as updated dashboards and Visual Discovery, upgraded mobile functionality (including the ability to conduct analytics offline), and a new interface that allows users to work with the data source of their choice (i.e. Microsoft Excel).

Features

Birst has a wide variety of features, such as big data services, data warehouse automation, and managed data mashups. You can also access your BI data from mobile devices, such as iPad and iPhone. The BI solutions also work with any of your existing systems, such as Salesforce, SAP, or Microsoft Analysis Services.

Implementation/Integration

Birst outsources its implementation to Primitive Logic. The process can be tailored based on a company’s need but we’ve listed the general steps below of a typical implementation. Note that implementation can take from six to 12 weeks.

  • BI Strategy Architecture & Planning – Goals the company has of utilizing BI solution
  • Process Design & Optimization – Defines business requirements, process design, and design KPIs and metrics
  • BI Platform/Vendor Assessment & Selection – This step may not be needed if the company has already decided on Birst as its solution.
  • BI Implementation & Integration – The solution is designed, configured, and implemented. Data integration and training is also done during this stage.
  • Manage Operational Support – Primitive Logic provides tech and user support, as well as product upgrades. Again, companies may not need this step if they decide to get tech support from Birst directly.

Customer Service & Support

Birst provides 24/7 technical support, live phone support during regular business hours, and a support portal. The support portal allows users to access information on troubleshooting and other general inquiries. Birst also provides tutorials free of charges so users can get their feet wet before deployment.

Pricing

Birst does not publicly release their pricing information. Please contact them directly for a price quote.

Shortcomings

Although easy to produce, reports are limited to basic ad-hoc reports.

Some users have expressed frustration with limited product support. Perhaps most relevantly, this includes a lack of non-English language user support. Users have also had difficulty discovering the source of errors in reports, and issues resolving them with the support team.

Additionally, iOS users cannot use Birst because it is an Adobe Flash-based software.
