More details on the paper-handling and MFP features are in our Features section below.

Sharp continuously upgrades its machines with faster speeds and newer features. Like the MX-M1055 and MX-M1205, the MX-7090N and MX-8090N Pro Series are very strong devices for the production environment, such as publishing firms, in-plant operations and central reprographics departments (CRD).

Features

Paper handling: Each device includes a standard two-tray tandem configuration that consists of one 1,200-sheet tray and one 800-sheet tray. There are also two trays of 500 sheets each that adds up to a standard configuration of 3,000 sheets.

Companies can choose to add additional trays as options: a 100-sheet multi-bypass, a 3,500-sheet large-capacity tray, a 5,000-sheet two-tray large-capacity air feed unit and a 500-sheet multi-bypass unit (requires purchase of large-capacity air feed unit). The maximum capacity is 13,500 sheets.

There’s a standard single-pass duplexing document feeder. It has a 150-sheet capacity and can scan paper up to 200ipm.

There is a 250-sheet output tray. Sharp offers a variety of finishing options. First, there is a 4,000-sheet stapling finisher with 100-sheet multiposition stapling. There’s also the 4,00-sheet saddlestitch finisher with 100-sheet multiposition stapling and 80-page booklet making. A 2/3-hole punch unit can be added to either finisher.

There’s also a 5,000-sheet stacker for high-volume post-process work. Other finishing options include a multi-folding unit, a two-tray post-process inserter unit, a Plockmatic Production Booklet Maker System that produces up to 120-page booklets and a GBC SmartPunch Pro that uses up to seven punch styles.

MFP Features: These machines has a 1.9GHz processor and standard 6GB of memory. A standard hard drive holds 1TB.

PCL and PostScript are standard. Users can also directly print PDF files and select Microsoft Office formats. USB and Ethernet connectivity are standard.

The models offer standard network scanning. That includes one license for SharpDesk scanning software, which is a utility allowing you to program the models with email addresses, FTP servers and network PCs as destinations for scanned documents using a networked PC. The scan function includes both LDAP support and network authentication. File formats include TIFF, PDF, XPS, PDF/A and encrypted PDF.

There’s a compact PDF feature that can reduce the size of scanned color documents, making it more manageable to scan and save those documents.

Sharp offers its Cloud Portal Office for storing and sharing documents and content in the cloud. Users can also access cloud apps such as Microsoft OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Online and Google Drive.

Security features: Security features include account management, 256-bit encryption, user authentication, SSL encryption and confidential printing. There’s also an optional data security kit that includes data overwrite, incorrect password lockout, document filing access control and restricted list printing. Sharp includes an end-of-lease feature that erases all data at the time the device is traded in.

First, there is the MX-PE13 External Fiery Print Server, which is designed for more demanding and advanced printing workflows. It has a 3.2GHz processor, 8GB of memory and 1TB hard disk drive. It supports the Adobe PDF print engine for an end-to-end print workflow.  It also includes the Fiery Command WorkStation for setting up and printing complex jobs.

The other server is the MX-PE14 Embedded Fiery Print Server. It has a 2.7GHz dual-core processor, 2GB of memory and 500GB hard disk drive. It includes similar features as the External Fiery Print Server, such as variable data printing, the Fiery Command WorkStation, Fiery ColorWise color management technology and booklet making. There is the optional Productivity Package that automates job submissions and makes last minute image corrections.

Finally, these devices also have strong emphasis on energy-saving features. They are Energy Star certified and RoHS compliant. Sharp also offers its toner recycling program for all Sharp cartridges, drums, and bottles.

Shortcomings

The MX-7090N and MX-8090N are only intended for production-level environments so its features and speeds are too robust for small and even larger offices. Those offices can check out our other reviews on Sharp, such as the MX-5070N Series.
