Product Overview

The CLX-9201NA, CLX-9251NA, and CLX-9301NA are the latest ledger-sized MFPs to Samsung’s lineup. The CLX-9201NA ($6,310) prints and copies at 20ppm in both black and color. The CLX-9251NA ($7,330) runs at 25ppm in both modes, while the CLX-9301NA ($8,270) has a speed of 30ppm.  First page out time in color is 12 seconds for the CLX-9201NA and 11.5 seconds for the other two models. Other than the difference in speed, all three models share identical specifications.

Printing, copying, and scanning are standard; faxing is optional. All models also have a 7″ color touchscreen LCD control panel with a strong graphical user interface, such as swapping and scrolling capabilities. Processor speed is 1GHz. Memory is 1GB, not expandable. There is a standard 320GB hard drive. Standard connectivity is through USB and Ethernet ports.

More details on the devices’ features are found in our Features section below.

We were unable to calculate the costs per page at this time, but each toner provides very good capacity – 20,000 pages for black and 15,000 pages for each color toner.

Samsung is selling these models through its authorized channel partners, which also provide authorized service as well as warranty and consumables options.

These machines are good buys for offices that need color, full multifunctionality, and ledger-sized printing and copying. These are strong features, plus they have very good paper-handling features and are compact to reduce desktop real estate.

Features

Paper supply starts with two 520-sheet main trays and a 100-sheet bypass. You can add another dual 520-sheet tray set for a total input capacity of 2,180 sheets. For finishing, Samsung offers a 350-sheet inner finisher with 50-sheet stapling. There is also an optional job separator. As noted above, ledger-sized paper handling is supported.

The print engine supports PCL and PostScript output. You can also print PDF files directly. Duplex output is standard for both copying and printing.

In addition to a flatbed platen, copying and scanning are supported by a 100-sheet duplexing automatic document feeder (DADF). The scanner is color capable, and supports scan-to-email, scan-to-SMB, scan-to-FTP, and to local files (TWAIN) and network folders. Scanning to an attached USB flash drive is also supported.

The optional fax function includes a 33.6kbps mode with JBIG compression.

Shortcomings

We do not have prices for consumables to calculate cost-per-page. Also, Samsung is only selling these devices through its authorized partners.

About

Samsung has long manufactured laser engines for printer and fax vendors such as Lexmark, NEC, and Xerox, but now the Korean company has become a major player in the laser printer market under its own name. Samsung also sells color printers, fax machines, and small-office multifunctional equipment under its own brand.

Samsung offers competitive laser printers up to 65ppm. Its printer division is growing in importance. Formerly a unit of the conglomerate’s Dallas-based telecom operation, the printer division has moved to New Jersey and now has the stature of a full-fledged Samsung subsidiary — a move that has facilitated its sales, marketing, and branding efforts.

In addition to its printers and MFPs, Samsung’s Business division also sells laptops and tablets, mobile devices, displays & TVs, and medical devices.
