Product Overview

The fi-6400 is Fujitsu’s latest entry in its production-level scanner lineup. At $12,995, it scans at 100ppm in black, grayscale and color (duplex speed is 200ipm). Please note that the speed is in landscape mode; in portrait mode, the speed is 85ppm (170ipm duplex). The daily duty cycle is 30,000 pages.

The scanner is intended for large workgroups and production markets. It includes an interactive, adjustable, LCD panel that provides shortcuts for common scanner functions, such as paper protection, pick speeds, batch counts and more.

More details can be found in our Features section below.

Fujitsu offers the following options: postscan imprinters (see Features section), training and installation, onsite extended warranties, and a ScanAid Kit with consumables and cleaning supplies.

There is a 90-day onsite limited warranty with the fi-6400.

For a powerful and sturdy scanner, the fi-6400 is compact and quiet (its decibel level comes in at 55).

Scan input resolution can go up to 600dpi in both grayscale and color. There is a wide range of image enhancement tools such as noise removal, automatic color detection, blank page detection and thresholding, as well as image orientation and paper deskew.

Fujitsu also includes its Scanner Central Admin functionality, which allows you to perform scanner monitoring features (such as running status and consumable status) from a single location.

In addition, Fujitsu introduces several new features with these scanners, such as a “skew reducer” function that detects and corrects paper skews of various documents. Another new feature is the acoustic sensor that monitors the sounds of a scanning document and stops the scans once an error is detected. Fujitsu also includes its newest software, the PaperStream IP and PaperStream Capture.

An optional postscan imprinter is available. It is TWAIN and ISIS supported and allows you to adjust the printing position of up to 40 characters that can include a date-and-time stamp and sequence numbering in a user-defined string.

There is a 500-sheet hopper with an adjustable stacker. Ultrasonic double-feed detection is standard. Connectivity is via USB.

The fi-6400 can handle documents ranging from ID cards or business cards to legal-size paper, and it can handle long documents (up to 120 inches in length) through the automatic document feeder (ADF) as well. It can also deal with embossed cards, such as medical insurance or credit cards.

Fujitsu, based in Japan, is a computer, telecommunications and electronics conglomerate. In the U.S., Fujitsu sells a range of document scanners as well as data storage devices such as magneto-optical (MO) drives and tape drives.

Fujitsu sells a variety of document scanners, ranging from low-end machines costing under $2,000 up to fast units selling for about $25,000. Fujitsu markets its products through computer industry channels, which consist of value-added resellers (VARs) and the distributors who supply them. The company dabbles in selling its low-end scanners over the Internet — several of the more desktop-oriented models are sold that way.

Fujitsu also offers an add-on board called IPC (Image Process Controls) with many of its scanners. The board is standard equipment on some of these models; on others it must be purchased separately.

The board enhances images during production without stopping the scanning process. It has a number of features that can help improve scan quality. Among the many settings are: background removal, reverse image format, ballpoint pen filtering and OCR smoothing.

Other vendors may offer some of the same features, but they’re usually executed using PC-based software. This can have a negative effect on productivity. With Fujitsu’s system, the various features don’t slow the scanning process because they’re part of the IPC hardware in the scanner.

Fujitsu’s “No Excuses” warranty program offers replacement equipment in two business days if your machine malfunctions during the first year of operation.
