ADP has cloud-based payroll solutions that also includes HR features, such as recruiting and time and attendance. It provides a variety of solutions tailored specifically to organization size.

Here’s a brief overview of each solution (note that for the purpose of our review, we’ll focus on the solutions that are intended for small businesses and companies with less than 1,000 employees). We also want to note that ADP offers various solutions for each organizational size, however for brevity, we’ll focus on one solution per size:

Small Businesses (under 50 employees) – ADP offers the RUN Small Business Solution. Not only does this product help small businesses with payroll and tax compliance, it also helps with other HR functions, such as recruiting. It also integrates with other software, such as accounting, and it can be accessed via any mobile device.

Mid-Sized Businesses (50-999 employees) – For mid-sized organizations, there is ADP WorkForce Now, which is a complete HCM platform. This solution is beneficial to not just HR, but business owners and finance as well. WorkForce Now can also be helpful with other business functions, such as business intelligence.

WorkForce Now helps companies comply with tax and healthcare regulations, manage payroll and time & attendance, and encourage employee wellness.


Here are some of the key features ADP offers in each product:

RUN Small Business Solution – The RUN Small Business Solution has three tiers: Essential Payroll, Enhanced Payroll and Complete Payroll + HR. All three tiers provide payroll features, state and federal compliance resources, healthcare compliance, HR dictionary and HR newsletters.

The Complete Payroll + HR offers additional features, such as:

  • Employee handbook wizard
  • Applicant tracking and background checks
  • HR HelpDesk support of dedicated HR professionals on HR topics and issues

ADP offers its Professional Services implementation package as an add-on for its ADP Workforce Now solution. Companies work with ADP’s consultants on software customization and implementation, such as a tailored strategic implementation plan.

ADP provides a variety of training courses for its solutions. Users have the option to either take a classroom-based course, an online course with a virtual instructor, or self-tutorials. ADP also offers continuing education credits for its clients in such roles as Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Customer Service & Support

ADP offers different support sites for employees and client administrators. The employee support site has several resources, including answers to common questions, guides on troubleshooting year-end form issues, and phone numbers and links for issues related to payroll or benefits. The client administrator support site has similar content, but specifically targets administrative issues. 

Depending on the product package, ADP’s expert staff provides support on benefits administration and payroll (including contacting the IRS on the client’s behalf), gives HR resources to clients’ employees (HR help desk or forms library), or offers consultations on HR strategy or day-to-day issues.

Users have reported that the online registration, login and password reset processes have been tedious and not user friendly (e.g., not allowing long passwords).

There also tends to be delays in customer service response (being on hold for a long time) and cases of getting different answers from different customer service reps.
