Bad: Recruiting and learning management features are only available on the HR Pro tier.
Bottom Line: Cloud-based solution that specifically helps small businesses streamline their payroll and HR tasks.

Product Overview

ADP sells a variety of solutions that are targeted to specific company sizes. This review focuses on ADP RUN platform.

ADP RUN is a web-based payroll and HRMS solution specifically designed for small businesses with less than 50 employees. It has an intuitive interface with streamlined features so small business owners can focus on critical aspects of running an organization.

Users can run payroll quickly from any device. ADP’s automatic tax features help owners keep on top of the federal and state regulations so they’re in compliance. RUN also includes a mobile app for accessing features outside the office.

RUN offers four pricing tiers, so companies only pay for the features they need. We detail each tier in our Features section below.

For companies that want to outsource some or all of their payroll and HR functions, ADP offers two optional services. First, there’s ADP Comprehensive Services, where dedicated payroll and HR experts provide guidance on recruiting new employees, managing benefits packages and filing payroll taxes. Second, the ADP TotalSource provides full HR service for companies that want to outsource those functionalities entirely.

Features

The four tiers are:

Essential Payroll – The Essential Payroll tier targets companies that only need basic payroll and HR functionality. It includes direct deposit, check printing, the Wisely direct debit card, reporting, a general ledger interface, tax filing, W2 and 1099 forms, employee self-service, new hire onboarding multi-jurisdiction payroll, background checks, employee discounts and marketing services with Google Ads.

Enhanced Payroll – This tier gives companies additional payroll features, including check signing and stuffing, state unemployment insurance management, labor law poster compliance, paycheck garnishment services and integration with ZipRecruiter.

Complete Payroll & HR Plus – This tier adds on an employee handbook wizard, HR HelpDesk (phone and email support from ADP’s staff), salary benchmarks, an HR forms library, HR tracking and HR training and toolkits.

HR Pro – HR Pro has even more advanced features, including enhanced HR HelpDesk and employee handbook support, employer and employee training courses, sexual harassment prevention training programs, an applicant tracking system and a learning management system.

ADP RUN offers add-on features for all tiers: time and attendance, workers’ compensation, retirement and health insurance. In addition, users on the Essential Payroll and Enhanced Payroll tiers can purchase the Small Business Marketing Toolkit, powered by Upnetic.

Implementation/Integration

As RUN is deployed in the cloud, the implementation process is shorter than traditional on-premise installation.

ADP provides a variety of training courses for its solutions. Users have the option to either take a classroom-based course, an online course with a virtual instructor or self-tutorials. The vendor also offers continuing education credits for its clients in such roles as Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

RUN integrates to a variety of accounting and point-of-sale systems such as Xero, Wave and Quickbooks.

Customer Service & Support

ADP offers different support sites for employees and client administrators. The employee support site has several resources, including answers to common questions, guides on troubleshooting year-end form issues, and phone numbers and links for issues related to payroll or benefits. The client administrator support site has similar content, but specifically targets administrative issues.

Depending on the product package, ADP’s expert staff provides support on benefits administration and payroll (including contacting the IRS on the client’s behalf), gives HR resources to clients’ employees (HR help desk or forms library), and offers consultations on HR strategy or day-to-day issues.

Pricing

ADP has a limited-time offer where the first three months of the RUN subscription is free. The company doesn’t publicly release its pricing information, so please contact them directly for a quote.

Shortcomings

While RUN offers an applicant tracking system and a learning management system, they’re only available on the HR Pro tier.
