Product Overview
Trello is a project management tool designed to help individuals and teams collaborate better and keep their projects organized. They offer a freemium model that lets users work with an unlimited number of boards, lists, and cards. It can also be integrated with cross-functional departments.
All details of a particular project are located in what Trello refers to as boards. Each board is categorized using lists, with each list including individual cards that have further details on a project, such as the team members involved, task checklists, discussions and comments.
Cards can be annotated with labels for easier searching. Users can filter cards within a single board and find a specific card via the search tool at the top of the page.
Trello is accessible on any mobile device, including smart watches and Kindle Fire tablets. Any changes or additions to boards, lists and cards are made in real time since data is automatically synchronized across all devices.
One unique feature of Trello is its Power-Ups. Power-Ups turn each board into what Trello calls “living applications” by adding different features and integrations. Integrations can include document management solutions, social media or business functions such as HR, marketing and IT.
Trello’s freemium version includes built-in automation, unlimited cards, up to 10 boards per Workspace, unlimited Power-Ups per board, unlimited storage (at 10 MB per file), Trello templates, up to 250 Workspace command runs per month, custom background and stickers, unlimited activity log, assignee and due dates, a mobile app and two-factor authentication.
There are three paid plans:
- Trello Standard – The Standard plan is intended for small teams and includes unlimited boards, advanced checklists, custom fields, unlimited storage (at 250 MB per file), up to 1,000 Workspace command runs per month, single board guests and saved searches.
- Trello Premium – Trello Premium is intended for teams with up to 100 members who need to track multiple projects. In addition to the features of the Standard plan, it includes dashboard/timeline/calendar/workspace table/maps views, unlimited Workspace command runs, admin and security features, workspace-level templates, Board Collections, Observers (premium security setting that limits a user’s action within a board), priority support, Google Apps sign-on and simple data export.
- Trello Enterprise – Businesses with more extensive needs can opt for Trello’s Enterprise plan, which offers features designed for large companies that must coordinate projects with multiple teams. Some of those features include unlimited workspaces, organization wide permissions, organization visible boards, public board management, multi-board guests, attachment permissions, Power-Up administration and free SSO and user provisioning with Atlassian Access.
Trello also has a feature, Butler, that allows teams to automate their workflows. It automates different processes using rule-based triggers, custom cards and board buttons, calendar commands and due date commands.

About
Trello was launched in 2011 by Frog Creek Software as a free app to help individuals and businesses stay organized and collaborate with their teams. The app was initially only for iPhone users until 2012, when it became available on Android devices.
Trello’s paid business plan, Trello Business Class, launched in 2013.
The company spun off into its own entity called Trello Inc. in 2014. In early 2017, it was acquired by Atlassian, the vendor of Jira Software. Over the years, it’s steadily increased its customer base – most recently at over 19 million registered users.
One fun fact about Trello: Its spokesperson is the co-founder’s dog, Taco.
