Product Overview
Xerox debuted its new line of printers and MFPs targeted for the small-to-medium-sized businesses. Called VersaLink, this new line is designed to help those businesses that has limited IT resources work with an easy-to-use and secure printing device. Each VersaLink printer includes a wizard that guides the user in setting up the device and connecting it to their servers. It’s also integrates with mobile devices and cloud accounts.
One of those devices is the VersaLink B405DN MFP, the multifunction sibling of the B400 Printer series. The B405DN ($879) print at up to 47ppm and has a first-page-out-time of 8 seconds. It also includes standard copying, scanning and faxing features.
The B405DN comes with a 1.05GHz processor and 2GB of memory. Printing languages supported include PCL, PostScript, direct PDF and XPS. USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi Direct connectivity are standard.
As mentioned above, the B405DN supports mobile printing. Users can print from and scan to a variety of apps, such as Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Mopria, Xerox Print Service Plug-in for Android and Near Field Communication (NFC) devices.
The B405DN also includes a 5″ color touchscreen with a touch-and-swipe user interface that resembles mobile devices. It also comes with access to the Xerox App Gallery so users can download specific apps to help customize one-touch printing tasks that reflect their workloads.
The B405DN supports printing from and scanning to these following cloud accounts: Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft 365, DocuShare, Google Drive and Dropbox.
More details on the B405DN is in our Features section below.
The VersaLink B405DN MFP provides strong features for SMBs that don’t have IT resources, need an easy-to-use device and doesn’t need color output. We especially like that it has an easy set up, reasonable operating costs and is adaptable for a mobile office.
Features
Standard paper handling for the B405DN start with a 550-sheet tray and a 150-sheet bypass. Xerox offers up to three 550-sheet trays for $199.99 each. The maximum paper capacity is 2,300 sheets. Each tray support paper size up to 8.5″ x 14″.
There is also an optional printer stand for storing paper, toner and other materials. Duplexing is standard.
Output is only a 250-sheet tray. There is also a 60-sheet automatic reversing document feeder. There are no finishing options. The maximum duty cycle is up to 110,000 pages per month.
Users can scan to these following destinations: USB, email and network. File formats supported are PDF, JPEG, TIFF and XPS, to name a few.
The faxing function includes a 33.6kpbs modem, as well as LAN faxing, direct faxing to email and fax dialing.
Xerox includes many standard security features, such as secure print, user authentication, network authentication, hard drive overwrite, IP address filtering and access controls, to name several. Xerox offers its PrintSafe Software as an option.
There is also the Simple ID feature, where users access commonly-used apps on the home screen. The user is assigned a dedicated ID and password, which they enter only once.
Xerox has a few options in terms of its aftermarket print cartridges: standard-capacity, high-capacity and extra-high-capacity. For our purposes, we calculated the cost per page based on the extra-high capacity cartridge (24,600 pages). The cost per page is 1.7 cents, which is very reasonable.
Businesses can also keep costs down by taking advantage of Xerox’s environmentally-friendly features, such as duplexing and/or choosing its Earth Smart settings as default for printing jobs.
