Product Overview

Ricoh has introduced two new color single-function printers for the medium-to-large organizations with high-volume printing needs. They are the SP C840DN ($3,885) and the SP C842DN ($5,139). The SP C840DN prints at 45ppm in both black and color, while the SP C842DN runs at 60ppm.

Both devices include a 1.75GHz processor and 2GB of memory. The C840DN has an optional 320GB hard drive, while the hard drive is a standard feature in the C842DN. PCL, PostScript, direct PDF and direct media print are standard; Ricoh offers host printing and XPS language as options.

There is a a 10.1″ touchscreen with touch-and-swipe functionality referred to as the Smart Operation Panel. Users can customize their own commonly-accessed workflows, such as one-touch printing or copying, applications or accessing the web. Users can download widgets and apps from Ricoh’s Application Site.

The SP C840DN and SP C842DN supports standard USB and Ethernet connectivity, as well as mobile printing. Parallel, Wi-Fi and an additional USB port are offered as options.

The SP C840DN and SP C842DN have a compact footprint and includes many features designed for companies with high-volume printing needs.

Features

Both devices include a variety of paper-handling features. The standard paper capacity of 1,250 sheets includes two 550-sheet trays and a 100-sheet bypass. Ricoh offers the following optional paper units: a choice of one additional 550-sheet trays or two additional 550-sheet trays, a 1,500-sheet side large capacity tray and a 2,000-sheet large capacity tray. The maximum paper capacity is 4,700 sheets.

Aside from one of the 550-sheet trays, the other units support paper size of up to 12″ x 18″. Duplexing is supported. There is also an optional banner printing guide tray.

Standard output capacity consists of a 500-sheet tray that supports 8.5″ x 11″ paper or a 250-sheet tray that supports 8.5″ x 14″ paper. There are a variety of finishing options.

First, there is a 1,000-sheet hybrid stapling/stapleless finisher with 50-sheet multiposition stapling, 5-sheet stapleless capability and optional 2/3-hole punch kit. There is also a 1,000-sheet booklet finisher that staples up to 50 sheets and saddlestitches up to 15 sheets. A 2/3-hole punch kit can be optionally added as well. Another finishing option is a 3,000-sheet finisher with 50-sheet multiposition stapling. There is also a four-bin mailbox with 125-sheet capacity per bin. And finally, there is a multi-fold unit that supports half-fold, Z-fold and tri-fold.

There is a server for document management functionality that stores up to 3,000 documents and 1,000 pages per document.

Ricoh continues to expand its security options, including the user authentication and the ability to set limits of printing by user. Also offered is watermarks, encrypted protection and hard drive data overwrite.

Aftermarket consumables consist of a 43,000-page black print cartridge, color print cartridges (34,000 pages each for magenta, cyan and yellow) and black and color drum units. We don’t have the prices to calculate the cost per page. However, based on Ricoh’s history of providing low costs of ownership, the cost per page should be reasonable.
