Product Overview

These four printers come with higher print speed than their predecessors, with the FS-4300DN’s 62ppm speed being the fastest in Kyocera’s black-and-white printer line. The four models are as follows: the FS-2100DN, which runs at 42ppm and costs $1,259, the FS-4100DN that prints at 47ppm and has a list price of $1,469, the FS-4200DN that has a price of $1,629 and runs at 52ppm, and the FS-4300DN, which prints at 62ppm and costs $2,439. Aside from differences in price, speed, duty cycles, and consumables, all four models share the same specifications.

These machines are intended for the large workgroups that regularly prints larger-than-usual print volumes. They have fast print speed, decent paper handling, and excellent operating costs.

All models have standard duplex printing. There is a 750MHz processor and 256MB of standard memory. Memory can be upgradeable to 1,280MB maximum.  A 32GB hard drive is available for $580.

USB and Ethernet connectivity is standard. A wireless option is available. PCL and KPDL (Kyocera’s proprietary PostScript language) is included, as is direct PDF printing.

These machines offer decent paper-handling features. As far as paper input goes, they come with a 500-sheet standard drawer and a 100-sheet bypass. You can add up to three additional 500-sheet paper trays ($249 each) or a 2,000-sheet large-capacity tray ($749). On the output side, paper handling is more limited: a 500-sheet bin can be supplemented with a 250-sheet option on all the machines except for the FS-2100DN. The FS-2100DN provides only a 250-sheet output tray. No finishing is available on all machines.

Duty cycle is 150,000 pages per month for the FS-2100DN, 200,000 for the FS-4100DN, 250,000 for the FS-4200DN, and 275,000 for the FS-4300DN.

As with other Kyocera models, list prices are higher than those for comparable competitors. However, those prices are negotiable, and these Kyocera models also deliver operating costs that are among the lowest in the black-and-white single-function printer category. We calculated the cost per page to be 0.75 cents for the FS-2100DN, 0.60 cents for the FS-4100DN, 0.48 cents for the FS-4200DN, and 0.44 cents for the FS-4300DN.
