HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M650 Series Review

Good: Flexible paper handling, Sure Start feature for preventing security attacks, low operating costs.
Bad: Wireless connectivity is only optional; not intended for offices with low-volume printing needs.
Bottom Line: A new series of scalable color single-function printers with strong features.

Product Overview

The new Color LaserJet Enterprise M650 Series joins its multifunction siblings in HP’s lineup of devices targeted to larger offices. There are four single-function monochrome printers grouped in two smaller series: the M652 and M653. All of these devices range in speed from 50ppm to 60ppm in black and 47ppm to 56ppm in color. They also include a 1.2GHz processor and 1GB of standard memory.

There are two devices in the M652 series: the M652n ($1,100) and the M652dn ($1,300). Both devices print at up to 50ppm in black and 47ppm in color. They also have a first-page-out time of 6.4 seconds and include a 2.7″ LCD panel with a keypad. The M652dn includes standard duplexing.

The M653 series also include two devices: the M653dn ($1,800) and the M653x ($2,150). These printers can print at up to 60ppm in black (56ppm in color) and has a first-page-out-time of 5.7 seconds.  They also include a 4.3″ color touchscreen.

More details on these printers is in our Features section below.

The LaserJet Enterprise M650 Series is a good buy for larger offices looking for a single-function high-volume printer with color output.

Features

All seven printers include PCL and PostScript printing language. USB and Ethernet connectivity is standard, while wireless is optional. Direct mobile printing is optional (except for the M653x, which has standard embedded Wi-Fi Direct). Users can download the HP ePrint, Apple AirPrint and Mopria-certified apps. Standard memory can be optionally expanded to 2GB maximum.

All printers include a standard 550-sheet tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose tray. An additional 550-sheet paper feeder is standard for the M653x. Users can optionally add up to four 550-sheet trays. There are additional options for all devices (except for the M653x): a 550-sheet paper feeder with stand and cabinet, a 550-sheet and 2,100-sheet high capacity feeder set and a set of three 550-sheet trays with a stand.

A 500-sheet output bin is standard. Automatic duplexing is supported for all printers except for the M652n. There are no finishing options.

The M650 Series ship with a 12,000-page black toner and 10,500-page (each color) toner cartridges. HP also offers optional high-yield cartridges. For our cost-per-page calculations, we’ve used the prices and yields of the high-yield cartridges (27,000 pages for black and 22,000 pages for each color). The cost per page is 1.3 cents for black and 0.07 cents for color. That is pretty remarkable, especially for color.

And finally, we’d like to note the HP Sure Start security feature that helps prevent any viruses, malware or other attacks. With the Sure Start feature, a printer can self-detect an attempted attack and if such an attack occurs, will reboot itself and send a notification to the IT administrator.
