Product Overview
Fujitsu recently debuted its Image Scanner fi-800R in its lineup. At $795, the fi-800R scans at up to 40 ppm simplex and 80 ipm duplex (in 200/300 dpi), using a 20-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF). There’s a daily duty cycle of 4,500 sheets.
The fi-800R is set up to scan a variety of documents from ID cards to booklets. It accommodates a document size with a minimum of 2″ x 2″, a maximum of 8.5″ x 14″ and long page scanning of up to 220″. The fi-800R doesn’t include a paper exit tray; instead, it has a dual path mechanism with two features that help make scanning efficient. First, there’s the U-turn Scan feature that returns the document through the same feeder after the scanning is done. It uses the automatic stacking technology that allows the stacker to extend itself once scanning starts and then folds itself back when the scanning is complete.
Then, there’s the Return Scan feature that allows users to scan ID cards and folded documents without using a carrier sheet. The card is fed and returned in the slot in front of the scanner.
Additional details on the fi-800R is in our Features section below.
The Image Scanner fi-800R is an efficient and versatile device designed for many scanning needs, therefore improving productivity. Its compact form can fit well in cramped spaces, including desktops.
Features
Scan input resolution can go up to 600dpi in both grayscale and color. There is a wide range of image enhancement tools such as noise removal, automatic color detection, blank page detection, multi image output, background pattern removal and thresholding, as well as image orientation and paper deskew.
Connectivity is via USB. The fi-800R has several other features, such as a “skew reducer” function that detect and corrects paper skews of various documents. There’s also the acoustic sensor that monitors sounds of a scanning document and stops the scans once an error is detected.
Software included are the PaperStream IP and PaperStream Capture for document management functionality. PaperStream Capture introduced a new feature that can easily sort batch documents: Automatic Profile Selection. Automatic Profile Selection prevents users from having to adjust formatting and settings for each scanned document. This feature can recognize specific formatting for each document and, based on preset configurations, can automatically specific image processing settings and saving destinations.
The software also has a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) Recognition feature that picks out idenitifable data on passports and extracts them as metadata. And the Front Side Detection feature automatically recognizes the photos on IDs and passports and then set pages with those photos as the front side.
Finally, the Scanner Central Admin solution allows IT staff to perform scanner monitoring features (such as running status and consumable status) from a single location.
