Product Overview

Epson has expanded its A3 portfolio aimed at small and medium businesses with two new MFPs: the WorkForce Pro WF-C878R and the WorkForce Pro WF-C879R. Both devices include printing, copying, scanning and faxing as standard features.

The WorkForce Pro WF-C878R has an ISO speed of up to 25 ppm in black and up to 24 ppm in color. The WorkForce Pro WF-C879R has an ISO speed of up to 26 ppm in black and up to 25 ppm in color. The maximum draft speed is up to 35 ppm on both printers, but the duplex speed is up to 17 ipm and 18 ipm for the WF-C878R and WF-C879R, respectively. This is in thanks to the next-generation PrecisionCore Heat-Free Technology, which uses a high-density print chip that can generate up to 40 million precise dots per second.

In addition to Epson’s proprietary printing language, both printers support PCL and PostScript. USB, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi connectivity is standard. Users can print from their mobile devices via the Epson Connect solution that includes Email Print, iPrint Mobile App, and Remote Print. They can also print via the Apple AirPrint and Kindle Fire.

There is a 5″ color touchscreen so users can access frequently-used workflows. The device also integrates with other web-based applications, such as PaperCut MF, via the Epson Open Platform.

The WF-C878R and WF-C879R are sold through the BusinessFirst reseller channel, so unfortunately, we don’t have a list price. Companies can contact their local reseller for a price quote.

More details on this device is in our Features section below.

Epson continues to upgrade its printers and MFPs with faster engine speeds and better features to help SMBs improve productivity and reduce operating costs. The WF-C878R and WF-C879R includes strong features, such as versatile paper handling, mobile functionality and the extra-high-capacity cartridges.

Features

Standard paper handling starts with a 250-sheet tray and an 150-sheet rear tray. Epson offers three optional paper trays of 500 sheets each for a maximum capacity of 1,900 sheets. The device accepts paper sizes of up to 13″ x 19.”

The monthly duty cycle is 75,000 pages, but Epson recommends a monthly cycle of 10,000 pages. Automatic duplexing is supported. While both printers has an automatic document feeder, the capacity for each feeder differs: 50 sheets on the WF-C878R and 150 sheets on the WF-C879R. The WF-C879R also has an optional 20-sheet manual stapler.

Copy features are duplex copying, collating, resizing and adjustable copy density.

Scanning is done via a color CIS sensor on the WF-C879R (the CIS sensor on the WF-C878R is only monochrome). It supports scan-to-PC, scan-to-cloud, password protected PDFs and an address book via LDAP.

Faxing is supported via a 33.6kbps modem and the maximum memory is 550 pages. Users can send or receive faxes via their PCs.

One innovative feature that we want to highlight is the Replaceable Ink Pack System. Epson offers both high-capacity and ultra-high-capacity ink packs for each of the four inks (black, cyan, yellow and magenta). The yields for each of the four high-capacity cartridges is 20,000 pages. However, the extra-high-capacity page yields are even higher: 86,000 pages for black and 50,000 pages for each color ink.

We don’t have pricing information to calculate the cost per page, but companies expect to save money on replacement ink in the long run utilizing the higher page yields.

Both printers has wide range of security features, such as PIN number certification in order to release jobs, user control access, printer and network settings via Web Configuration, SSL/TLS and IPsec.
