BambooHR At A Glance

Good: Emphasis on employee self-service, affordable for smaller businesses.
Bad: Not intended for larger companies, learning management feature isn't offered.
Bottom Line: For small to mid-sized companies that want simpler HR functionality and no spreadsheets.

Product Overview

BambooHR is a software as a service (SaaS) solution targeted toward small and medium-sized companies that have outgrown spreadsheets. Employee information is centralized in one location that makes it easier for HR to find pertinent employee data.

Employee information and other functions are available anytime, anywhere, so HR can access them even after regular business hours.

HR can also track employee benefits and job and salary history, as well as performance. For users who need to track other data, BambooHR can add customized fields to the system.

BambooHR also has a reporting functionality that can create and share reports in a short amount of time. The Report Library allows users to select pre-built reports as well as creating custom-built reports for sharing. Because creating reports only takes a few clicks, it saves hours of time for HR. The reports can be exported to Excel and PDF.

For recruiters, there’s an applicant tracking system (ATS) that’s integrated with existing BambooHR software. Recruiters can access candidates’ resumes and LinkedIn profiles, as well as post jobs and share candidates’ applications with hiring managers.

BambooHR has many features. We also want to mention that it supports global features, meaning it can adapt to multiple languages and multiple currencies.

Another feature we want to point out is email alerts. Alerts can be set up for any reminders, such as employees’ anniversaries, benefits renewal, performance evaluations, etc.

BambooHR also supports electronic signatures, which saves HR time and money on paper forms. Electronic signatures are secure with enterprise-level encryption and regular security monitoring.

There is also the performance management feature that lets businesses provide feedback on employee performance more frequently. Employees’ goals and action plans are detailed as well as feedback from his/her peers. Both employee self-assessments and manager’s assessments are included. The module also sends automated reminders based on the frequency of the performance review process.

There’s the optional time tracking module that includes daily time entry, employee timesheets, approval workflows, automatic reminders, automatic overtime calculations and an exported time report for payroll.

BambooHR has an optional benefits administration module that lets employees sign up for open enrollment and update their benefits (e.g., qualifying life event). HR can approve the employee’s enrollment or update, send reminders and change election coverage. Updated benefits data are automatically synced with the health insurance company and other benefits carriers. HR can also stay on top of their benefits planning with two reports: Enrollment Window Election Summary (shows all approved elections) and Benefit Election Changes (changes to employee enrollment).

Finally, BambooHR offers an add-on payroll module with features that include employee access to their payroll information, full-service tax filing, reporting, end-of-year forms and high data security. Users can also reach out to customer support on tax-related questions.

BambooHR offers two packages: Essentials and Advantage. The Essentials package includes the following features:

  • HR management, such as employee records, benefits tracking, reporting, document storage, standard reporting, standard access levels, standard workflows and approvals, and email alerts

BambooHR provides a short implementation process that takes three steps:

  • Importing client’s employee data (or migrating them from client’s old system)
  • Customizing the system, such as email alerts, new-hire/termination checklists, configuring leave policies, etc
  • Deploying it live to entire company

BambooHR also provides customers with training via videos and webinars, as well as customized training.

BambooHR integrates with several applications, such as Workable, Ximble , GoodHire, Bonusly , Litmos, OfficeVibe, Boomr and LeverThis.

Customer Service & Support

In addition to email and phone support, BambooHR has a community support feature where users can communicate about the product and get answers, help with troubleshooting, etc.

BambooHR uses a pay-per-employee per-month pricing model. It starts at $6.19 per employee per month for the Essentials package and $8.25 per employee per month for the Advantage package. Companies can contact BambooHR for a custom price quote. Prices can be discounted based on the company size.

Clients can optionally add on the performance management, time tracking, benefits administration or payroll modules at an additional price.

BambooHR is intended only for small and medium-sized businesses. Larger companies may want to look at our other HRMS reviews, such as Dayforce HCM.

While it offers the ability to track training, BambooHR doesn’t offer full learning management functionality.
