Odoo ERP At A Glance

Good: Modular system, customizable free and open-source Community version.
Bad: Steep learning curve, set up can be difficult for users who aren’t familiar with an ERP system.
Bottom Line: Odoo is an open-source ERP offering both free and paid versions. Its features and functionality can help companies streamline processes, cut costs and grow business.

Product Overview

Odoo is a comprehensive open-source enterprise resource planning (ERP) software made up of an integrated suite of business modules, including customer relationship management (CRM), e-commerce, accounting, billing, inventory management, project management, warehouse management, financial management, manufacturing and purchasing. These modules aim to efficiently and seamlessly communicate with each other to exchange information.

Odoo comprises over 30 main modules that are regularly updated. In addition, more than 16,000 third-party apps/plug-ins are available in its app store. Because it’s a modular system, customers can start with a subset of tools and add modules as needed.

Formerly known as OpenERP, Odoo is available in the cloud or on-premise and can be used by businesses of all sizes. Because it’s open source, Odoo software is highly customizable. Developers can access the code and modify it to make changes in the modules based on an organization’s requirements. Odoo can also integrate with other systems, including payment processors and external shipping systems, such as those of Amazon, eBay, UPS, FedEx and QuickBooks.

Odoo is available in two versions: Odoo Community, which is free, and Odoo Enterprise. iOS and Android apps are also available for the paid version.

Features

As an open-source solution, Odoo and its features/modules can be modified at code level to meet the specific demands of a user. The expanse of its breadth includes tools that address Sales, Invoicing, Point of Sale, Email Marketing, Subscriptions Management and more. The following modules represent the ERP’s functionality:

E-commerce: With an integrated e-commerce platform, inventory and sales can easily be maintained via automatic stock adjustments and reporting. Dedicated customer portals help keep customer data organized with order tracking and claims, allowing customers to download invoices and delivery orders, as well as view pending shipments from a single location.

CRM: Odoo offers an intuitive user interface designed for sales and a dashboard that renders a broad overview of the sales activities. Also, it supplies useful tips and best practices to enable customers to strategically configure and deploy their CRM. Odoo’s mobile user interface accommodates members of a distributed sales team, even without an internet connection.

Inventory: Odoo’s unique double-entry inventory management allows full tracking of materials and product from the supplier to the customer. Customers can pack and deliver orders with or without barcode scanners. Odoo prepares delivery orders for customers based on availability.

Manufacturing: Companies can use Odoo to manage all their assembly and/or manufacturing operations. Odoo automatically triggers quality checks for the manufacturing department.

Accounting: Odoo automates the entire invoicing process, enabling customers to save time on data entry. Users also get instant access to all accounting features on their mobile devices. With a few clicks, companies can also automatically track assets and depreciation boards and generate amortization entries, as well as manage all events associated with assets.

Employees: With the Odoo employee module, firms can gather in one database all the information concerning each employee, recording each employee’s status, job title, contract type, and dates and schedules. Customers can also create weekly and monthly timesheets and trace the time spent by employees per project.

Implementation/Integration

Deployment of Odoo can be achieved in three different ways.

Customers can implement the software themselves. Customers can implement the software with Odoo’s help by purchasing Success Packs (recommended for companies with less than 50 users). Or, customers can implement with the help of Odoo partners (recommended for organizations with more than 50 users).

Success Packs include a package of premium services overseen by a dedicated consultant. During the implementation phase, customers will be assigned an Odoo project manager to analyze their requirements and configure their Odoo apps according to their needs.

Prices for Success Packs for new customers (that includes the 15% off discount) are:

  • $3,060 for the 25-hour Basic plan, recommended for simple apps.
  • $5,950 for the 50-hour Standard plan, recommended for advanced apps and data import.
  • $10,625 for the 100-hour Custom plan, recommended for advanced apps, data import and customizations.
  • $21,250 for the 200-hour Pro plan, recommended for advanced apps, data import and customizations.

In terms of integration, Odoo is API-friendly and integrates easily with other systems, including Amazon.com, eBay, UPS, FedEx and QuickBooks.

Customer Service & Support

On its website, Odoo offers training/educational material, user documentation, videos and a free trial, so companies can test the software. It provides functional support and bug fixing services on standard features, 24/5, in English via email for paying customers.

A customer that purchases one of the Success Packs plans will get a dedicated consultant, as well as support by email or live chat in application. In this case, support teams speaking English and French are available around the clock from Monday to Friday.

Customers that have issues can also submit support tickets via the website. There is also a community forum where users can ask and answer questions about the Odoo apps.

Customer support for the Community Edition is limited to the forums and some manuals for older editions.

Pricing

Odoo Community is a free basic plan that includes access to a limited number of apps (e.g., CRM, Sales).

Odoo Enterprise has a free plan that includes access to only a single application/module, and it accommodates unlimited users. Then, it has two paid plans: Standard and Custom. The Standard plan costs $24.90 per user, per month (with discount included for new users) that accommodates an unlimited number of apps. The Custom plan costs $37.40 per user, per month and are for organizations that prefer to customize Odoo to fit their requirements.

Odoo offers a 15-day free trial.

Shortcomings

Odoo doesn’t offer direct phone support. It has a relatively steep learning curve and the setup can be difficult for users who don’t understand ERP.

About

In 2005, Fabien Pinckaers, the founder and current CEO of Odoo, began developing TinyERP, his first software product. Three years later he changed the name of his product to OpenERP. The company started to evolve quickly, and by 2010 OpenERP employed more than 100 employees.

In 2014, OpenERP transitioned from a service company to a software publishing company and renamed itself and its product “Odoo” – to indicate that it was no longer just focused on ERP. With a new name and new direction, Odoo began building business solutions such as e-commerce, business intelligence and CRM.

Headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, Odoo has offices in the United States, Luxemburg, India and Hong Kong.
