Toshiba e-STUDIO2550c

25ppm color & black and white

Sum-up: New color MFPs with scalable configurations for the small or medium size offices.

The new Toshiba e-STUDIO2050c and e-STUDIO2550c joins Toshiba’s color MFP line-up. They are similar to the new e-STUDIO2551c family, however, these machines support advanced features, such as additional finishing options, higher paper capacity PostScript and XPS support, and optional hard drive, to name a few. The e-STUDIO2050c ($5,339) copies and prints at 20ppm (in both black and white and color) and has a 56,000-page duty cycle. The e-STUDIO2550c ($6,895) runs at 25ppm and has a 70,000-page monthly duty cycle. Both machines support standard copying, printing, and scanning (and optional faxing), and has a color first-page-out time of 10.3 seconds. Standard memory is 2GB and there is an optional 160GB hard drive ($199).

Both machines also include a 9″ VGA color control panel that is adjustable and one-touch buttons to access specific multifunction features. It can be tilted to reduce glare, and it is also Section 508 compliant. (This is the governmental standard for handicap access.) Also new with these models is an upgraded Universal Print Driver, which allows users to print from any e-STUDIO machine in the office without a need for setting up individual print drivers.

As with earlier e-STUDIO models, these machines have an integrated controller architecture, called e-BRIDGE, built directly into the machine. Thus the copier’s operating system runs all of the machine’s functions — copy, print, and scan. This type of design improves multifunctional performance and lowers manufacturing costs as well.  There is also an optional Open Platform support for connecting to Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, and Google Docs.

With the optional hard drive, these machines support e-FILING – it supports up to 200 private user boxes with the maximum of 100 folders per box, 400 documents per folder, and 200 pages per document.

PCL, PostScript, and XPS printing are supported. Ethernet (including Gigabit Ethernet) is standard, and Wi-Fi is optional, as is USB direct print and scan.

Network scanning is supported. Scan-to functionality includes scan-to-file, scan-to-TWAIN, and scan-to-email. File formats supported are JPEG, TIFF, PDF, and secure PDF. The Advanced Scanning ReRite software is available as an option.

The fax option is based on a 33.6kbps modem with JBIG compression. Other faxing features are fax forwarding, Internet and network faxing.

Paper handling starts with a 250-sheet tray and a 100-sheet bypass. You can add various paper options for a maximum of 2,900 sheets. These optional paper trays include a 550-sheet unit ($550), a 550-sheet pedestal ($980), and a 550-sheet drawer ($550). There is also the optional 2,000-sheet large-capacity tray ($1,225). Each tray handles up to ledger-size paper, with the exception of the large-capacity tray, which handles letter-sized pages only. Also optional are automatic duplexing and a 100-sheet RADF ($1,585).

There is a wide range of output options. The inner finisher ($1,760) has a two-tray 600-sheet capacity with 50-sheet stapling. You can add a 2/3-hole punch unit for $850. There is also a 100-sheet saddlestitching finisher ($3,395) with 50-sheet stapling and 60-page (15-sheet) booklet making. You can add a separate hole punch unit to the saddlestitching finisher for $850.

Extensive security features include IP and Mac address filtering, network port control, and network authentication. Also, a new security feature includes what Toshiba calls “role based access control”, which allows administrators to restrict users without having to use an LDAP server. Optional security features include self encrypting drive, data overwrite, and IPSec enabler.

The e-STUDIO2050c family is a good buy for a small- or medium-sized office that needs a base model but is looking to scale up to a full-fledged configuration later. They have excellent features, such as advanced security, more finishing options, and higher paper capacity. We give this family our Editor’s Choice Award.
